Foraging for Beginners - Lonnie Carr

    Introduction

Foraging edible plants is how man survived for thousands of years. All of our ancestors foraged in one way or another, and it wasn’t until recent times that the practice came out of style

With the rise of industrialization came a serious change in the way that man obtained his food. Even though agriculture was king, people still went out in the wild to get edible plants. They went out and picked berries. They forged wild apples—even roots. Many people can still point out plants that are edible and poisonous.

People have become completely disconnected from the world that they live in. They no longer go outside and explore. They stay in their homes and watch TV. They look at pictures of mountains instead of visiting them. More and more often the common practices of camping and picnics are not only forgotten; but they are also considered taboo.

People have lost something so intrinsic to our nature. We no longer look at the planet as a vast expanse to be admired, explored and feared. Instead, we look at it as a burden to be conquered and something to be avoided.

We cannot forget our roots or the world around us. With the advent of climate change and the environmental destruction that is ensuing around the world, it has never been more important for us to cherish the world around us.

Learning about nature, and discovering its secrets is one of the best ways to learn how to appreciate it. It gives you a sense of respect and appreciation for nature. Once you learn what’s out there, and how easy it is to find food, then you can feel more comfortable in the wild. You will also be more prepared if you end up in a bad situation.

    Chapter One: Nature’s Bounty

People would be surprised just how easy it is to get in a bad situation. Your car might break down and leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere. You might get lost when you’re hiking. Trails seem to disappear, and you’re going to face more than one mechanical issue. It’s best to be prepared.

Survivalist skills aren’t just a specialist skill for paranoid small town folk and crazy doomsday freaks. It’s a vital tool that everyone can use so that you don’t have to worry if something happens. It's about learning how to protect yourself, and you can really have fun with it in the process.

    What Matters Most

Imagine walking through the woods and finding a little elf wearing a fast food uniform offering you a burger and fries. Everyone knows that doesn’t happen, and it scares them. In fact, it’s the thing that most people fear the most.

People simply don’t know how to take care of themselves without the crutches of society, and many people do starve when they become stranded because they don’t know where to get food. The sad part about that is, it’s not hard to find.

If you want to survive in the wild, you need to be able to find edible plants. These can include every single type of plant that you can think of, from salad greens and ever flowers to berries and roots.

Some of the most common plants we see in the wild are completely edible, and the great part is, they’re often quite nutritious. It’s completely possible to eat better when you are in the wild than when you are in town. You just have to know where to look.

Food is probably the most important aspect of being in the wild, but medical care is another serious concern. Unlike food, the stuff you need to treat your wounds isn’t always around, and there are some things that a doctor can treat that you aren’t going to be able to do when you are in the middle of nowhere.

One example would be an infection. If a cut you got starts to get infected, which we will cover in-depth, then you won’t always be able to treat the infection, and often times, all you can do is stave it off.

Still, you would be surprised what you can do in the wild when it comes to medical care. There are plants that aid the healing of lacerations. There are plants that will stop the wound from getting infected. There are plants that take away pain regardless of whether it’s an ache, or you are having muscle or joint pain. There are even plants that help take away the pain of burns and help them to heal.

Many of these plants are the most common variety of plants you’ll find in the wild. While some of them do require a little bit more skill, others are quite easy to use.

The things that matter are often times readily available to you when you need them. The most important thing is that you know what those things are and how to identify and find them. This isn’t easy. Plants have different stages of growth; they may look completely different at one time than another. It’s important to know your plant well, and you can’t do that easily. You have to carefully study each plant before you can identify it. Plant identification is one of the hardest things when foraging for a variety of extremely important reasons.

    Chapter Two: Safety

When I was a kid, there were these bushes all around my house with beautiful red, white and pink flowers. They were called oleanders. They were wonderful. They look so soft and shiny. They smelled wonderful. I wanted to pick them and play with them. They intrigued me so much.

One day, my grandmother came to visit, right after we moved in and she took my father aside to talk to him. She was an RN at one of the largest hospitals in the city, and she worked the
