The Prepper's Guide to Foraging - Robert Paine
Do you worry what would happen to your family in an emergency?
In a Survivalist or Doomsday scenario, you and your family still need to eat!
The Prepper’s Guide to Foraging is an excellent resource and foundational guide that covers many topics of foraging for food in a survival situation. Especially helpful for the seeker and the new-to-prepping, there are also many great ideas for even the seasoned prepper.
With The Prepper’s Guide to Foraging, you'll learn:
- Why learning to forage will be so important in a survival situation
- What types of edibles you can actually forage
- How you go about foraging in a real-world situation
- What equipment you will need to forage
- What to do after you have foraged
- Much, much more!
The reasons why you prep really don’t matter. What matters is how long you’re prepping for, and the means you go about doing it.
Survivors are a unique group of people. Some people call us Survivalists, Doomsday Preppers, or Patriots. You may not consider yourself any of those things. Whatever you may want to call yourself, if you're reading this, you are on the first step to helping your family become Emergency Prepared Survivors.
What is Prepping?
Many times when people think of prepping they get the image in their head of some crazy person wearing tinfoil on their heads waiting for the aliens to arrive but that really is not the case. In reality prepping is simply preparing for an unknown future. You see, the time that we live in is very dangerous. With many terrorist organizations threating the people of the world it is important for us to prepare for the worst even if we are hoping for the best. Many people who take part in prepping think that the world is going to face a huge change soon and they are simple preparing for it.
Today those who take part in prepping usually focus on two main areas. The first area is acquiring the supplies that are needed in order to live. The fact is that all of us must have food, water, and shelter if we want to live. We have to drink water daily and we must eat daily so this means we will forever need a continual supply of food and water. We also as humans have to have shelter in order to protect us from the elements. The type of shelter you will need basically depends on the climate you live in. You may be thinking well that is true but I have a house, it is my shelter. You are right but when a prepper thinks about shelter they think about worst case scenario, remember prepare for the worst and hope for the best. So the prepper will prepare as if staying in their home was not an option.
Preppers always make sure that they have enough food in their homes so that if they lose their jobs or there is a transportation strike, their family does not go hungry. They do this by stockpiling food when the prices are at their lowest. Preppers also usually grow gardens and some even raise a few animals in their back yard.
Preppers also ensure that they are out of debt. This means that they get rid of all of the credit cards, pay off their mortgages, and live within their means. They work very hard to provide for their family and don’t rely on others to provide for them.
It may seem that preppers spend a lot of time focusing on food but they do not stop there. They make sure that they know how to hunt and fish, cook, and build emergency shelters. They also spend time learning emergency first aid as well as alternative medicines. Many of the foods that you will learn about in this book can be used as alternative medicines to treat many health issues if traditional medication is not available and many of these natural medicines actually treat the health issues better than traditional medicine does. Preppers learn how to make fires, can foods, sew, tie knots and so much more. The purpose of prepping is to learn as many lifesaving skills as you can before you will need them. It is all about being prepared.
Why Would You Need to Prep?
You may be asking yourself right now why you would need to prep or forage since there seems to be an endless supply of food brought to your grocery store each and every day. You have heat, electricity and water all in your home so why would you spend your time preparing for a time when there was no food or water.
As we already discussed, preppers are preparing for the worst case scenario. What are you going to do to feed your family if the grocery store shelves are empty? What if you cannot get your life saving medications? How are you going to survive if the grid fails and there is no electricity of years? Or how are you going to survive if another world war breaks out or terrorists attack. These are all reasons why preppers do what they do. With so many threats on the horizon, a prepper insures that their family will be provided for without having to rely on anyone else. They insure that their family will not go without food or water or any of the life sustaining needs that they have. Have you ever stopped to think about what would happen if the Middle Eastern countries stopped selling their oil to the US? The food supply would literally be stopped in its tracks the ones who will have food if this were to happen will be the preppers.
Why is it Important to Learn About Foraging Today?
Most people have no idea what plants are edible. They go to the grocery store, buy what looks good and take it home. They do not realize that they can literally go out into their back yard and find great healthy plants that they can eat. The reason why you should learn how to forage is because of the fact that most people have no knowledge in this area whatsoever and by learning how to forage you will have the upper hand in any survival situation that were to arise. There is also a joy that comes with taking a walk in the woods and seeing that there is more food available to you than you could ever eat.
One of the reasons many people learn how to forage is because they have lost a job or cannot provide enough food for their families. Now you may say yes but there are government programs out there to help those people which is completely true but the government is broke and there are some people who do not want to add to the debt of the US government so they take up foraging in order to feed their families. Another important reason that you should learn how to forage right now instead of waiting until it is needed is because just as there are millions of plants worldwide that you can eat, there are millions of plants that will kill you if you eat them. It is important to know the difference before you are in the situation where you are hungry and looking for food. Before consume any wild plant you need to know exactly what it is so that you are not causing harm to your body.
What Can You Forage?
There are so many different plants that you can forage fruits, vegetables and nuts that grow in the wild. First I want to start out by talking about several of the vegetables that you will be able to forage. These vegetables are going to give you the nutrients that your body needs as well as fill you up fast and keep you full.
Dandelion- One of the most common plants that people see as a weed and many try to get rid of Dandelion is a very healthy vegetable and a great find for those who are foraging. During the later months it should be noted that Dandelion develops a bitter taste but if it is boiled the bitterness disappears. You can prepare a sauté with Dandelion if your resources allow you with butter and garlic. You can even add bacon if you have it on hand. In a survival situation the likeliness of having extra ingredients is slim so boiling will then become your best option. In the spring months, Dandelion actually has a sweet taste and can be eaten raw. There is no part on the Dandelion that cannot be eaten and even the roots can be used for tea. This tea contains vitamins A, D, C as well as zinc, iron, potassium and magnesium. The tea can be used as an anti-inflammatory, diuretic, antioxidant, it also has been shown to regulate blood sugar and can be applied directly to eczema for relief. It is also known to benefit the liver and kidneys.
Plantain- Another very common plant (not to be confused with the fruit) that grows in most people’s yards this plant is known for its long stems, which produce a large amount of seeds.
