About this ebook

Young and New Adult novella. Dori Hudson and Matthew Branson were best friends. They had been since Dori gave a little girl a black eye for bullying Matthew. But that was a long time ago, and now Matthew was her hero for the same reason. But no one warned them that they were growing up and Matthew didn't like the other guys noticing Dori. On a regular fishing trip to the creek, Matthew kissed Dori and everything began to change. Dori had secretly admired Matthew for a while now and had only waited for his first move. It didn't take rocket science to see they were madly in love with each other. But Dori was black and Matthew was white and his father didn't approve, nor did her mother.

Dori's mother had fallen in love with a white man too, and she'd gotten pregnant with Dori. Problem was Dori's father was already married, and he had to leave her mother. So Dori's mother was very protective of Dori and sensed the feelings between the two teenagers had changed. But would they listen to their parents, or would the ruin the once chance at a good education and better life.

All they knew for sure was, they couldn't break up. They were soulmates from the beginning, and that bond had only strengthened through time.

    Dedication

When people become best friends, it doesn't matter what age you are, what color you are, where you live, it just is. I believe when best friends grow up to fall in love, they are become soulmates. Maybe I'm just a romantic at heart.

    Chapter One

Wow that girl is built, isn't she? One of the guys from another school was saying as Dori Hudson ran the metered dash. And look at her go. I gotta meet her.

Matthew Branson stared at Nathan. At first, he wasn't sure what to say. The guy didn't know him, Nathan was pretty popular from another school track team, but Matthew bristled. It wasn't the first time it had happened lately. It seemed more and more guys were looking at his best friend like that, and he didn't like it.

He tried to stop the anger festering inside of him. What was wrong. He just thought Dori was cute. What was wrong in that? Yeah, what was wrong in that?

When he met Dori after the race, he took her a bottle of water, still wrestling with his inner feelings about the crack Nathan made.

Thanks, I'm sure thirsty, Dori smiled at him.

    You did great.

It wasn't my best time, but I'm a little tired.

You really looked great out there. He repeated, with a slight frown.

She looked up at him. Yeah, She nudged him in the ribs. Like you'd notice.

I noticed. He walked off a little sullen.

Hey, she caught up to him and pulled on his sleeve. What's wrong with you today?

    Nothing, I'll see you later.

We still going fishing Saturday? She asked a little puzzled by his expression.

Yeah, we are. He turned to look at her. He came up to her, paused and bent to kiss her on the cheek. We are. He winked. Just a rotten day I guess.

She smiled, Okay. Momma might get peeved if you didn't catch her some fish.

Is she the only one? He stared down at her now.

Well, I like them too, you know. She blushed.

Good. He winked. See ya later.

    ***

I'll be back in a bit, Momma. Dori Hudson called through the kitchen doorway.

Where you going child? Her mother asked as she looked up from sewing in the living room.

It's Saturday, Matthew and I are going fishing, bring you back some for supper, okay? Dori called.

Her mother chuckled, Girl you better, else I know you are doing something besides fishing.

Dori came in the living room and flashed a quick frown at her mother who was darning an old pair of socks. I done told you Momma there is nothing going on between Matthew and me. He's my best friend. She declared shaking her head. And it's not that I wouldn't like something going on, but there isn't. We're friends, you know that, best friends. That's all.

Yeah that's what you keep saying alright, her mother sobered. But you gotta admit you hang out with him more than William, or Joe, now don't you?

Dori sighed heavily, and pouched out her lover lip. She'd had this same conversation last Saturday. "We have been over this a million times, Momma. William and Joe are my cousins. And William's two years younger than me. I don't want to hang out with him. Joe's got a girlfriend and he don't want to hang out with me. What's the problem, I've hung out with Matthew for years, when are you gonna accept that we are best friends Momma? I always thought you liked him. Besides, William doesn't know how to fish. Dori laughed. In fact, all he wants to do is play with that stupid game of his. He's so boring. I can't drag him out of his house, now can I?"

I do like Matthew, he's a good guy. But you are growing up Dori. And at some point, he's bound to notice. I just heard what you said. You want more from Matthew, don't you girl? Her momma looked at her seriously now, Does his Momma know you two hang out all the time?

Matthew's Momma? She asked staring at the way she wasn't looking at her when she talked. That meant she was worrying about things.

Yeah, Matthew's Momma. She answered looking up from her glasses at her and laying the sewing in her lap.

I don't know. I guess she does, I've been over there several times. She's a nice lady, she always treats me nice. But honestly, yes, I'd love there to be more between us. I like him, more than any boy I know. I'm seventeen and I don't even date Momma, what's the problem. I like hanging out with Matthew. He's so easy to talk to, and we enjoy doing the same things. It's perfectly natural Momma. You make it sound nasty or something.

    And his father?

Dori hesitated. His father doesn't even get along with Matthew, much less me. But just so you know, he's never even kissed me. Not that I wouldn't like that either. I would. Matthew is the nicest boy I know, Momma. I gotta admit, I'm tired of practicing on just my pillow.

    "Dori, I’m only thinking of
