Garr becomes her protector and is more than willing to fight the threatening demgel, yet also extremely servile toward her. He feels attracted to his new charge; she in turn begins to lose her fear and is drawn to him.

Will the demgel come back and try to capture Beccah? If so, can Garr defeat him? And can a human and fire daemon look beyond their differences and find love?

    Chapter One

The day began like most other weekdays, with customers coming into her store to buy cakes, cup cakes, and cookies. Beccah loved her work, it satisfied her. Even as a small child she’d enjoyed helping her parents bake their popular fruit pies and tasty biscuits. As an adult, she’d assisted her father in the large kitchen. She’d measured, mixed, and baked whatever was for sale that day, while her mother served the customers in the front of the store. When her parents were away on business trips, she’d managed the store with some part-time help from a couple of her mother’s friends. Then, almost three years ago, her parents were killed in an ongoing clash between demons and demgels in a nearby town. The small hotel where they stayed while they looked into the possibility of opening another store was burned to the ground by demgels. This happened because the demgels’ rival demons lived in the hotel. Now Beccah ran the store, and also prepared a large quantity of cakes and finger foods for any functions that requested her catering skills.

It was mid-morning, sales were good so far, and everyone seemed to be in a pleasant mood. As Beccah brought her attention to the last person, waiting in line to be served, she smiled warmly. The smile quickly disappeared as she realized this customer was a demgel. It was most unusual for anyone other than humans and lycans to come to the store. She was always wary of both demons and demgels. They had caused her parents’ death, which made her dislike them. She knew that some demgels, being half demon, half angel, were ruled by their angelic side, but many were governed by their demonic nature. Beccah hoped this individual wasn’t one of the latter.

She asked, Can I help you?

Oh, I’m sure you can. He gave her a grin that looked evil and revealed his long, sharp fangs. Apart from you, what is the tastiest item in this store?

Well, it was obvious his inner demon was in control.

Have you come into my store to buy something or to annoy me?

The demgel shrugged. Why should I care if you’re aggravated? Humans are inferior to demgels. We just use your kind when it suits our purpose. For example, you’d make an excellent sex slave. He leaned forward, over the counter of cup cakes, and brushed her cheek with his long nails.

Beccah knocked his hand away and stepped back. Leave now or—

"Or what will you do? I’m much stronger than you, and I could do whatever I want to you. You’re here alone and have no protector on guard outside. If someone else was in the back, you’d have called out to him or her by now. I noticed you as I walked by the store and thought I’d come in for a closer look. I’m not disappointed. You’d serve me well for a while. I won’t take you to my mejin; I’ll sample you right here and now. I’ll bet I can make you squeal with delight…"

She shuddered from fear and disgust at his words.

Just then, the jingling of the bell on the store’s front door interrupted him. Two regular customers, who always bought her cookies came inside. They were able-bodied lycans and worked on a nearby construction site. Both shifters smiled at Beccah and she breathed an inward sigh of relief. Their presence should stop any further threat from the demgel.

He mouthed, I’ll come back at a more suitable time. Then, he turned around and brushed past the lycans as he exited the store.

Beccah informed, You’ve just saved me from something horrible. That demgel told me I’d make an excellent sex slave. I think he wanted to rape me right here in the store. Thank goodness you came in. Whatever cookies you want today are free. I’m so grateful you are here.

One lycan answered, Thanks, but you should have said something. We’d have shifted and attacked him before he had a chance to aim fire at us.

The other added, What you need is a protector. I’ve told Ajon here more than once, you shouldn’t be alone in this store without protection. I haven’t even thought about demgels; there are humans and shifters who might want to harm or rob you too.

I’ve thought about it, but I don’t like who the protectors are. Fire daemons are scary. They’re large, very strong, and can burn whatever they touch, including people.

"That’s why they’re protectors. No one wants to mess with them. Take my advice and call the Protector Division. Demgels can be really nasty, so you don’t want that one to come back here."

Okay, I’ll give it some thought, but I know some daemons are evil, too. Now, which cookies do you want?

The two lycans made their choices and Beccah put the cookies into bags. By the time they left her store, more customers had arrived and she was kept busy until the midday closing. Once the front door was locked, she ate a sandwich and debated whether to call the Protector Division. As a small child, she was taught about the value of having a protector, but her parents never felt the need to commission one, and she always felt wary of them. They were a type of demon and looked frightening with their tall, fiery bodies and red eyes. She wanted nothing to do with them.

Beccah debated back and forth for a while, and then decided caution should overrule her fear. She knew demgels rarely abducted humans from her world of Kurbridor, but often kidnapped them from Terra in order to take them to whichever mejin he or she served. In turn, and by the power of magic, the mejin would create clones of the human, which were known as the fetch, and gave the original individual to the demgel as a reward. The clones would become the faithful servants of the mejin and, unless the human was able to escape, he or she was the demgel’s sex slave. Quite often, and for various reasons, the human captive was killed. Such a dreadful outcome frightened her even more than her strong dislike of fire daemons. Also, the mere thought of being intimate with a demgel horrified Beccah.

She called the local Protection Division on the voicer and explained why she needed to be protected. The contact person agreed with her decision, quoted a fee of five hundred girrjuls and said a delegator would assign a protector to her, subject to her approval. They would come to her store within the hour. That information eased Beccah’s concern about the possibility of the demgel’s return. She unlocked the front door and served more customers.

At exactly two chimes, a middle-aged woman entered the store and walked up to the counter. With a smile she asked, Are you Beccah Simpton?

    Yes.

In a business-like manner the woman explained, I’m Delegator Lana Proust, from the nearby Protection Division. I’ve brought along a protector to see if he meets with your approval. If he does, then there’s an initial fee of five hundred girrjuls. At the end of six lunar cycles or before, you can either release him back to us, or should you wish to keep him indefinitely, that can be arranged with further charges. Does that sound acceptable to you?

That’s fine. Where is the protector?

He’s outside. I’ve chosen the fiercest and most deadly fire daemon that is held by my Protection Division. That demgel won’t dare come near you. She shuddered. Demgels are such repulsive creatures. Don’t you agree?

I’ve never had any real contact with them, but the one that came here was horrible. He looked very powerful, and when he grinned at me, I could see his sharp fangs.

Well, I’m sure he would be no match for Protector Garr, the fire daemon I’ve brought with me. Shall I go and get him so that you can see if you approve?

Beccah felt ambivalent, but replied, I suppose so.

The delegator walked out of the store and reentered followed by a huge fire daemon. He had to duck down to pass through the high doorway. His large form was completely covered by small, dancing yellow and orange flames. The only facial feature she could see were his deep, red eyes that seemed to bore right into her. She felt terrified. He stood close to the counter and bowed his head.

As I mentioned before, this is Protector Garr. To the fire daemon Lana Proust ordered, Turn around, so she can get a full view of you.

He slowly pivoted until he faced Beccah once more. She noticed he wore a pair of frayed shorts. She’d seen clothing on other protectors before and this always struck her as odd and almost funny. Why did they need human attire?

Show her how threatening you can be.

His body changed into a blazing, crimson column that terrified her. Beccah could feel the heat as it impacted on her face, and she moved back from her side of the counter.

Now say how you will protect her. The delegator looked at Beccah, and added, In this form fire daemons can only speak telepathically.

    Within Beccah’s mind a deep,
