About the Author
Chapter One
Daniel Brown is a man of routine.
He wakes up at 5:30 every morning. He uses the bathroom. He changes into his running clothes. He drinks half a glass of water, then straps his iPod onto his arm. He has a route for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. He has a second route for Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. He finishes the run within a thirty-second window every time.
He gets to work at 7:30 every morning, in a suit he pressed the night before, and he always walks around the left side of his secretary’s desk, because he timed it once and it’s two seconds faster than going around the right.
Tracy, his secretary, isn’t in yet because Daniel likes being the first into the office. He likes the stillness, likes the quiet, likes the opportunity to get settled without anyone disturbing him.
He knows the new sales team talks about him when he’s not around, knows that they throw around things like ‘control freak’ and ‘OCD’, but there’s a reason why he’s the Director of Sales, and they’re struggling to make their quotas every month.
He stops in the doorway to his office and frowns, because there’s a donut where his laptop should be when he unpacks it.
A glazed donut.
Daniel’s hand tightens on the smoothie he brings with him to work every day, and he looks around the room like the donut devil will be sitting in the corner, laughing. Daniel likes donuts. Especially glazed donuts. He wonders who found out and how.
It’s probably the junior sales reps hazing the interns or something.
He takes a deep breath and inhales the faint strawberry-banana scent from his smoothie. It helps push the thought of the donut out of his mind. He had his oatmeal and sunflower seeds and cranberries when he got back from his run. He has his smoothie to get him through his morning, and he has his yogurt and granola for a midmorning snack. He doesn’t need a donut. He doesn’t want a donut.
That last one might not be completely true.
Daniel finally tears his eyes away from the donut. He’ll put it in the trash and put the incident behind him.
Either someone was sucking up and left it on his desk, or someone’s pranking him. Either way, he’s not going eat the donut.
He sets his smoothie down on the left side of his desk so he can drink it while checking
