A Mother's Guide to Addition & Subtraction - Sandhya Anugopal

Key

Chapter 1

Addition

ADD

When we add we find a total of 2 or more numbers

For addition we use the symbol +

Let us look at addition by partition method

Example 1: Add 45+23

Let’s put these numbers in a table according to their place value

Now add the numbers in ones’ place

5 + 3 =8

Now let us add the numbers in tens’ place

40 + 20 = 60

Now to get the sum of 45 and 23 add the above answers

60+8=68

So, 45+23=68

Things to remember

. 0+0=0

. Any number added to 0 you get that number

Eg: 5+0=5 or 0+5=5

Example 2: Add 188+211

Let us put these numbers in a table according to their place value

Now add the numbers in ones’ place

8 + 1=9

Now let’s add the numbers in tens’ place

80 + 10 = 90

Now let’s add the numbers in hundreds’ place

100+200 =300

Now to get the sum of 188 and 211 add the above answers

300+90+9=399

You can also add the numbers in another method - Column method. Let’s look at that now

Consider our previous example 1: Add 45+23

Now write the numbers in the right place, then add the numbers in ones’ place first.
