WHAT ARE FRACTIONS?
Fractions are a way of writing portions of a thing. Think, for example, of a birthday cake. If you share your birthday cake with seven friends, you’ll cut the cake into eight equal parts. Each friend (plus you) will get an eighth of the cake.
A fraction is part of a whole (part of something) and is written down as a number on top of another number. A fraction is always smaller than 1, because 1 is equal to the whole or total of what’s being divided into fractions.
