    Chapter 1

I lay quietly in the cheap motel bed waiting for my one night stand to fall into a deep sleep. The trick was to wait until his breath changed from short and shallow, to deep and long. Snoring was a bonus clue, although tonight my chosen lover was quiet and peaceful. It’d been less than twenty minutes ago that he’d closed his eyes and rolled over after our energetic evening.

He’d be sufficiently satisfied of course, I knew how to play my role well. Even I was feeling good and that didn’t always happen - this guy knew how to press the right buttons.

He murmured in his sleep, which meant he was dreaming. It was time to leave.

I glanced at the clock with its fluorescent green numbers that glowed against the wall. Just gone three a.m. The early morning bus out of here came soon, although I didn’t have to hurry. The terminal was only three blocks away. Everything in this small town was only three blocks away.

The motel was your typical roadside cheap dive with twenty small rooms over two levels. Each room consisted of the main sleeping area with a bathroom at the back. It wasn’t the type of place you’d want to spend any time in. It was good for two things only. Sex and sleep.

We were on the bottom at the far end. The room was small and barely fit the double bed and chipped Formica table. There wasn’t even a closet to hang your clothes, just a metal rod that jutted out on the opposite wall with a few twisted hangers. A large window that took up most of the front wall was next to the door. It was the only window in the place, save for a tiny strip of glass in the bathroom. There was no escaping through the bathroom window. I wondered if that was considered a fire hazard.

The room was paid for in advance with cash. You always pay with cash.

It was quiet outside tonight. Even though the motel sat on a busy road at the edge of town, I couldn’t hear many cars going about their business. Everyone was probably asleep. The bar where I’d met this guy had closed two hours ago. Sleepy towns never have much of nightlife. My kind of hunting ground.

I swung my feet out of the bed and got up. The heat in this motel room was on the fritz, leaving it coming and going in short, sharp blasts every so often from the metal box that hung half in, half out of the window buzzing with a low hum. It was enough to keep the room from freezing, but not enough to stop my skin from prickling from the cold. Even so, I didn’t bother to get dressed yet. I had to see how much my haul netted me first.

I tiptoed over to the table where he’d thrown his belongings. His wallet was in the back pocket of his jeans that hung over the only chair in the motel room. I fished it out and opened it, expecting the usual one or two hundred dollars, but it was thick with notes. Mental sums indicated there was at least three thousand dollars here.

Tsk, tsk. Colt, my lover for the evening, had been a bad, bad boy.

I folded the cash over and stashed it in my backpack.

His cell phone was on the table. I’d already seen his pass code to get in, men are sloppy when they are about to get a piece of ass like me. I entered the four numbers and accessed the app I was looking for. It was necessary for me to know where my one night stands were during the getaway period. It made things a lot easier. Eventually they’d find the GPS tracker and delete it, but I was always long gone by then. Once it was set I placed his phone back on the table where I’d found it.

I moved the curtain to the side and peeked out. Colt’s motorcycle was parked outside the motel room. It was sleek and silver with black leather seats. A biker insignia was painted on the side, but he was alone tonight. They don’t always travel in packs, especially when picking up. I was grateful for that.

I wondered if I should take the bike. It would certainly be a faster getaway. My fingers played with the keys on the table as I considered my options. Hell, why not? It’d be better than the bus and much quicker. I wouldn’t keep it forever, of course, I’d leave it somewhere he could find it again. But, taking it would give me an advantage since he couldn’t chase me and get the money back if he didn’t have fast wheels.

He stirred in the bed, groaned and rolled over. Damn it, I was wasting too much time. I opened my backpack and pulled out the spare set of clean underwear I always bought with me on pick up nights. I left the black lace lingerie on the bed so he’d have something
