Claiming Their Royal Mate - Tiffany Allee

    Chapter One

He was thinking about her again.

Unwanted thoughts didn’t normally bother him. His natural state was one of great clarity and purpose. Of existing solely in the moment when necessary, and of thinking through and making quick decisions when required. Dwelling was a weakness he’d never indulged in.

    Until now.

Rejected. The sensation was strange—like a bitter flavor on his tongue. Useless. Just like lying in his bed and thinking of the woman who’d given him his first taste.

    Daniella.

Unlike the bitter rejection she’d left him with, her name tasted sweet. Her skin would taste sweet, as well. As would the rest of her. That taste was one he intended to sample. Soon.

No matter that she’d chosen another. Owen had all but given her permission to take Erick into her bed, into her body. And she wanted him—her body, if not her mind. Once they were back with the clan, she would bend to his wishes.

The buzz of the cell phone roused him, and Erick answered the call, despite his lingering irritation at the man on the other side of the line.

Yes. If Owen had called to beg his forgiveness, Erick wasn’t sure he could give it. Walking away from the lush woman Owen had claimed had been the most difficult thing he’d ever done—even knowing he’d only bowed out of the battle for her affections, not the war. The scent of her had overwhelmed him, and the smell of Owen on her skin hadn’t dissuaded his lust one bit. It brought to mind other memories of other times they’d shared humans.

Did Daniella know about their favorite game? He doubted it. Owen had clearly not seen fit to mention it—Daniella was human, after all. Humans had curious views about sex and found odd things distasteful. And while Daniella might think Erick an asshole, he wasn’t quite enough of one to bring their shared sex lives up in front of Daniella without cause.

E-Erick? The small, hesitant, and decidedly female voice on the other end of the line wasn’t what he’d expected.

    Yes, he said again.

    It’s—it’s Daniella.

Fear soaked her voice, but Erick didn’t know the first thing about comfort. And barraging her with questions would only delay her speaking. So he waited.

I got his SIM card. The phone was broken but the card still worked, she said, as if he cared how she’d gotten his number.

Tell me what’s going on, Daniella.

    A moment of hesitation. He’s gone, Erick. Someone—some things—took him, I think.

Erick surged to his feet, and inside his mouth his canines elongated.

I need…I need your help. I don’t know what to do. God, I shouldn’t have—I should have stayed with him. I— Her voice cracked.

    Where are you?

The truck jostled her, hitting a bump in the road, and Daniella looked around in a panic. Confusion touched her for a second, but no danger surrounded them—only a bumpy, gravel road. Owen was gone. Taken.

And she’d done nothing to stop it.

Where are we? she asked, glancing at the large man on the bench seat next to her. They were seated in the back. Another man—one she hadn’t met before—was driving.

I told you we were taking you somewhere safe, Erick said.

She stared at Owen’s best friend and the leader of the clan of tiger shifters she’d never known existed—let alone that she was a member of their race—before turning to look out the window.

The city of Denver was gone, and she could only see rocky forest around them. We’re in the mountains!

    Yes.

She turned to glare at the annoyingly calm prime. What the ever-loving fuck, Erick?

Something that might have been a smile hinted around his lips. Yes?

You answer me in one word again and I’ll figure out a way to hurt you. His mouth twitched again. Definitely a smile, the ass. Why are we out here?

Somewhere safe doesn’t include anywhere in the city. We aren’t far outside of Denver right now. You just can’t see the city on this part of the road.

We should be in the city, looking for Owen.

You’re exhausted. Dirty. A little smelly. His nose wrinkled and she gasped in outrage. I need to get you somewhere safe. Preferably somewhere with a shower.

You try running miles in flip-flops and see how good you smell by the end of it, she grumbled. And, hello? Vampires ring a bell? They have Owen. That’s a tiny bit more important than my BO.

The slight amusement in his expression disappeared, and he finally turned his head to look at her. His eyes, bright green and almost unnatural looking, gazed at her without emotion. Do you think I’m not looking for him?

Her breath caught, and her pulse kicked into high gear at his attention. She forced out words through gritted teeth. I think you’re riding in a truck—running away and taking me with you.

Eyes narrowing, he leaned in close. She tried to scooch back, but there was nowhere left to wiggle away to in the truck. I have my best trackers on him. And if it weren’t for you, I’d be there with them. But the fact of the matter is, you’re more important than he is to the clan, so I will see you safe. Then I will hunt my brother.
