    ANOTHER HAIRY TAIL 4

    JAMIE CAMPBELL

    CHAPTER 1

Music was pumping around the food court of the zoo. The cafes had closed a few hours earlier, giving way to the homemade chips and dips, bottles of soda, and muffins.

It was a hastily put together gathering, having only two days to organize it. The staff of the zoo had done their best, even though it was done with a heavy heart.

It was Logan’s going away party.

Nobody wanted to see the popular and fun vet leave the Mapleton Regional Zoo. Even the animals were upset and they hadn’t been told of the change yet. But the one most devastated by Logan’s departure was Hannah.

Cradling a plastic cup of orange soda, she stood in the corner away from all the lights. She didn’t feel like being a part of the crowd and throwing good wishes at Logan. She wanted her goodbye to be said in private, somewhere she could say what she really wanted to say to him.

I’m going to miss him like crazy, Alicia said as she found her friend’s hiding place. I can’t believe he’s going. Logan has been a part of this zoo forever. It’s not going to be the same without him.

    I know, Hannah replied.

Alicia’s gaze went from Logan, as he talked animatedly to his friends, to Hannah. This must be really hard for you.

She shrugged off the comment, trying to hide what was going on inside her head. We weren’t together for long.

    Doesn’t make it any easier.

No, it didn’t. And Hannah was grateful that somebody understood that. They may have only been on a few dates, but the small amount of time still had given her millions of butterflies and the possibility of so much more. Relationships weren’t about the quantity of time, but the quality.

Hey, what’s going on? Both the girls jumped at the sound of Harry’s voice as he joined them.

Alicia spoke quickly so Hannah didn’t have to. Just saying our goodbyes to the big man. Parties aren’t going to be the same without Logan.

Neither are our shifts. I learned a lot from him, Harry agreed.

He’s always happy to explain things.

In a way that you understand.

Hannah wasn’t really listening to the conversation. She was focused on watching Logan as he talked and joked with his colleagues. There was something magical about the man, he lit up the place like he was on fire. His presence would definitely be missed by all.

She caught his eye and he left the group to head in her direction. Hey, Hans. Can we talk for a moment? She nodded and allowed him to lead her further into the zoo area, somewhere away from the noise and people of the party.

Hannah didn’t know where to start so she kept to the facts. So you’re leaving for Africa tonight?

Yeah, on the redeye. Hopefully I’ll sleep for the entire flight so I can get started straight away when I land, Logan replied. There was excitement dancing in his eyes, as well as sadness. Any goodbye was always bittersweet like that.

You’ll have a lot of fun, I’m sure.

I hoping to do a lot of good things for the animals. I really want to make a difference.

And that was why she loved him so much. He was on a noble mission, ready to leave his mark on the world so it could be a better place with him in it. Hannah had no doubt he would do everything he set out to achieve.

Logan took the soda cup out of her hand and placed it on a bollard so he could hold her hands in his. I’m going to miss you more than anything else. I’m so sorry to be leaving you, Hans.

I’m going to miss you too. It’s not going to feel right being here without you.

The intern program finishes in two weeks. Then you’ll be going to college where you’ll forget all about me.

She shook her head. I could never forget you, even if I wanted to. I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve taught me this summer.

You’re going to be an amazing vet, Hans. Even more, you’re going to be an awesome animal warrior. You’ve got it in your heart, you’re going to defend and protect these animals for the rest of your life. Logan stared into her eyes as he spoke, making sure she knew he was being nothing other than sincere. You’ve got much bigger things to do in your life.

Hannah liked the words ‘animal warrior’. That’s how she felt about
