    Chapter One

I can’t believe it. Today, of all days. Astrid Jacobs threw her car keys onto her desk in despair. She was supposed to be on her way to a party, not back in the office. That bloody car is more trouble than it’s worth.

"That bloody car? Sue, her colleague and buddy, looked over from her desk with an amused expression. Surely your beloved Roadster isn’t giving you trouble?"

Astrid sighed. Don’t wind me up. Not today.

She rubbed one hand at the back of her neck, where tension had been building all day.

Sue was right though, she probably did love her car way too much than was good for her. She adored it. In fact her mother blamed the car for Astrid’s current single status, saying she never had a chance to meet a nice man because she spent so much time with her car, a 1968 MG Roadster. Since her last relationship had gone so spectacularly wrong it was all Astrid wanted though. Mostly. Driving the beautiful racing green MG made her feel confident and independent. But her beloved sports classic had chosen today to let her down.

Sue lifted her hands in surrender then leaned back in her chair. Okay, I won’t tease. What happened?

It won’t start. I have no clue why. She glanced at her watch. The party would start soon. Her plan had been to make an early appearance then sneak off before it got busy. There isn’t enough time for me to call Uncle George and get him over here, and if I don’t turn up to this party everyone will think it’s because I’m upset.

Sue smiled. You don’t want to go to the party. Maybe the car knows.

It was true. Astrid really didn’t want to go to the engagement party. I have to go. I’ve just got to show up, brazen it out and act like I don’t care.

I’d give you a lift, but Tom’s not due to collect me for an hour or more. Sue nodded her head toward the window. What about the mechanics on the doorstep? Why not pop over there and ask for help?

Astrid grumbled under her breath. When it came to hiring mechanics she’d been spoiled. Her Uncle George helped her with her classic motor. George had taken early retirement and was on hand whenever Astrid needed help with restoration or maintenance. The thought of going to a proper mechanic, a complete stranger – one who would surely expect a classic car owner to understand the real language of car mechanics – made her nervous.

Oh, come on, Astrid. You know I’ve been dying to find out what those two hunks look like close-up.

Astrid frowned. In that case why don’t you go over there and check them out?

My car isn’t broken. Come on, give it a go, it’ll do you good. In fact I can’t think of a better way to mend your broken heart.

I don’t have a broken heart, Astrid replied defensively. It was a lie. She had her pride and she could cope with her situation as long as people didn’t feel sorry for her.

All right then, Sue said, soothingly. The phone rang. You can get a taxi to the party, if you don’t have the nerve to ask for car help. Sue laughed and went to answer the phone.

Astrid folded her arms across her chest and sidled over to the window. Sue was right. It would be silly not to ask when there was a mechanic right there on the doorstep. It shouldn’t be a big deal. One of the guys who worked there might have two minutes to take a look. Glancing beyond the small parking area in front of their offices, she peered at the auto workshop across the street. There were several cars and utility vehicles lined up outside, including a recovery truck with a battered Mini Cooper hitched to it.

The mechanics would probably be way too busy to drop everything and look at her car, especially at this time of day. It was after six and usually they were shutting up by now. She and Sue often worked late because a lot of their calls came in at the end of the day, so they saw everyone from the surrounding premises leave before they did.

Right then one of the two hunks – as Sue called them – wandered out of the workshop. He squinted into the August sunshine while he rolled his shoulders, slow and rhythmically, as if loosening up his muscles at the end of the day.

Astrid couldn’t pull her attention away.

He really was something to behold, all muscles, but lean and limber. The other guy who worked over there was larger still – with close cropped hair and broad, powerful shoulders – but the guy she was looking at right then was all keen strength and agility, and his glossy black hair hung almost to his shoulders. In fact it was the other guy, the taller one, who’d caught her attention when she’d first seen them chatting about a car on the forecourt, but this one was gorgeous too.

Sue’s phone discussion faded away in the background.

While she watched, he unbuttoned the top part of his boiler suit and pushed it off his shoulders to hang from his waist, revealing the tight white T-shirt he had on underneath. Astrid’s breath caught in her throat. For a moment she thought he was actually going to take the whole thing off there and then. He didn’t, but she couldn’t help smiling, imagining what it would have looked like. He moved languorously, like a sleek animal. It wasn’t hard to picture him stripping off completely. It made her hot thinking about it. Parts of her responded with way too much interest.

Riveted to the view she watched as he limbered up some more. The heat haze of late afternoon made the image all the more surreal and entrancing, as if she were looking a movie or a music video and not a view from her office. A raunchy rock track was playing on the office radio, providing the soundtrack for his moves. It featured strip club guitar sounds, her favorite sort. The fabric of his T-shirt was taut across his muscular chest. His arms were tanned, the muscle of his forearms emphasized by the tattoos curled around them. It made her curious, what would his chosen artwork tell her about him if she could see them close up? She wanted to know.

A hot throb of need gathered between her legs and it grew denser by the moment. It had nothing to do with curiosity about his tattoos, however. Desire – that delicious experience of pure and simple physical desire – was coursing through her, making her hot and restless, making her want to gravitate toward the source. It hadn’t happened for a long while. She’d been off men. Now she wanted to wrap herself around the one she was currently watching, run her hands over his shoulders and feel every bit of him against her – at least she did in theory. What would it be like having a man like him come home to you every night? She sighed as she pictured herself massaging those powerful shoulders of his.

Maybe it would do her good to go down there, see him up close. Sue was right. She did have the perfect excuse. Whether or not they had time to help her out it would be a distraction, and then she could call a taxi to take her to the party. Her heart ticked faster. The possibility of all that gorgeous brawn – up close, as Sue kept pointing out – was a powerful draw. Then again her lack of experience dealing with mechanics might turn her into a blithering idiot. The idea of it made her chuckle. Normally she was a confident woman and she could talk up a storm. Surely she could handle it? She and Sue spent most of the day schmoozing with people on the phone, chasing up local interest stories for the county newspaper and booking in advertisements, cutting deals with local businesses and sourcing features for the paper.

Oh my God, Sue said, appearing by Astrid’s side. Would you look at that? What a treat!

Astrid had been so engrossed she hadn’t even heard the phone call end. I know. He looks like he’s posing for a calendar shoot – hunky mechanics of the year.

Yes. Sue snorted. So, what the hell are you waiting for?

Astrid glanced at her watch again, but didn’t even notice how much time had gone by. I should call a taxi and get this wretched party over with.

You never know, they might have time. Either way, meeting him will take your mind off Lucia’s party.

Exactly what I was thinking. Astrid dragged her attention away from the man limbering up on the forecourt opposite and looked at her friend. Sue’s eyes sparkled and her cheeks were flushed. It made her look vivacious and sensuous, and at the end of a hot day stuck in the office that was quite an achievement.

Do I look like that too? Astrid wondered. There was no denying the view set her pulse racing. What better way to turn up to Lucia’s party than with a glow? To hell with being dumbstruck by male beauty, she decided. I can handle it.

Okay, I’m going for it. Wish me luck.

    Chapter Two

On a hot day the inspection pit really was the coolest place to be, Deacon decided, then congratulated himself for finding a positive angle. It’d been a tough day and he was hungry. He was working way too hard, but it would be worth it.

It was two years since he’d opened up the workshop and the business had grown in leaps and bounds, with plenty of customers and a good reputation building in the local area. Vico had turned
