A Mile too High For Christmas - Tee Smith

    Chapter One

I hope you don’t mind if I talk. I’m a bit of a chatterbox. Where are you from? I’m from Coventry. Lovely part of the world, isn’t it? Oh, excuse me. Snort. The man blew heavily into a handkerchief.

Oh, great. Not only did she have to sit next to a chatter. From Coventry, no less, but now she was probably going to end up sick herself by the time she reached the end of the sixteen-hour journey.

I’m not sick. Honest. Just allergic to long-haul flights, he roared at his own stupid joke. "I suffer from hay-fever, y’know? Do you get it? I hear it’s bad in Australia this time of the year. I don’t know why I’m going there.

It’s my wife’s family, y’know. She died a few years back, bless her soul. Her family wants me to come over for Christmas. I keep telling them no. Each year they ask, Walt, why don’t you come over? We miss you, Walt. It would be awesome for you to spend Christmas with us. I don’t know how I’ll stand it, do you? All that heat. It’s just not Christmas without the snow, is it? Mind you…"

Maisie stared wistfully out the window to the tarmac. Men with yellow vests scurried below, preparing the aircraft for take-off. At least she had a window seat, she could lean on the window and sleep. She wondered if Walt would even shut up then. Oh, gawd, she hoped he wasn’t a snorer. This was going to be the longest flight of her life.

Excuse me, sir, I think you have the wrong seat. The voice of an angel filled her ears, and she turned her head to see a tall, good-looking man gesturing to Walt and showing him his boarding pass. I think there has been a mistake.

No, I was just telling this young lady here, I am going to Australia to see my in-laws. They are expecting me, he argued fervently, digging in his heels.

Do we have a problem here? came the voice of one of the flight attendants.

Maisie watched on while they talked through the mix-up. Praying Walt would get moved, and Mister Hottie might take his place. Suddenly, sixteen hours seemed not so bad after all.

Within minutes there was a swift change in seating arrangements and sure enough, her day had just turned around.

I hope you don’t mind? Mister Hottie asked, gesturing toward the aisle where she could still hear Walt rambling on to the hostess about the purpose of his trip to Australia.

No…not at all, she smiled, trying not to allow him to see her ridiculously giddy excitement. I mean if there was a mix up with the seats it’s only right that it be sorted out. It was just total luck it was in her favour, and she certainly hoped they hadn’t put her in the wrong seat.

I’m Kade, by the way. He sounded just like Hugh Grant, and it was hard not to swoon.

    Maisie, she responded politely.

It’s nice to meet you, Maisie.

Kade’s smile could light up any room. He had a slight cleft in his clean-shaven chin and perfectly straight, white teeth. With his strong jaw, this man could be a model. Her eyes fell shamelessly to the small triangle of bare chest she could
