    PREFACE

When a life is faced with a challenge, the solution at that point would seem for that particular challenge to be removed- for the issue to be resolved. One may feel if only this need is met... then my life will be ‘happily-ever-after’. No sooner is the need met, it is replaced by another. And the cycle goes on.

The Lord Jesus appealed to Martha But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part....1

Little wonder when the blind man who was healed by Christ assured his critics that one thing I do know. I was blind and now I see 2

My desire as you journey through the pages of this book, sharing the lives of the characters therein, is that you will discover the true essence of life. Remember, though the characters are fictional, their lives portray what real people do go through.

The needs in your life may be enormous, but the Master still says it is only one thing that is needed. Do discover that one thing as you read on.

    Much love,

    Adeola.

    DEDICATION

To God, Giver of all good things.

    CHAPTER ONE

Bimpe heaved a sigh, greatly exhausted. She had returned from shopping a few minutes before her neighbour, Mrs. Adedigba called. They spent the last half hour discussing the cake decoration Bimpe would make on the work they had at hand. Mrs. Adedigba was a good caterer but knew when she wanted the best on her cakes, she consulted Bimpe.

Bimpe willed herself to get up. She had to prepare dinner for her husband. She smiled wistfully, her marriage of 6 years to Dotun just seem like a dream. She was a housewife and enjoyed every bit of it, Bimpe did not mind at all – Dotun was all to her. They were not so rich but were happy and comfortable. Bimpe did not want anything more. Her husband, Dotun was a senior officer in one of the thriving banks in town. Nothing more could be used to describe their relationship than blissful. One must thank Allah for his blessings, Bimpe thought. She, a poor orphan to have the love and security of a faithful husband, it just seem too good to be true. Bimpe’s life at an orphanage had exposed her to many wants.

Mrs. Bimpe Kadri went about her chores happily. But as she reflected on her life so far with Dotun, her fervent prayer to God was the blessing of a child. Why God? That seems the only thing wrong with my life presently. When ever she remembered this, her heart would jump with fear. Her society did not joke with child bearing in marriage. In fact some believe that is the major function of any woman and a woman that does not have a child is regarded with suspicion especially by her in-laws. Many thoughts will be passing through their minds. May be she had misused her single years; maybe she is a carrier of some curse. Whatever be it, barrenness was not welcomed. But, Bimpe checked herself, she was not barren. She had undergone some medical treatments in the past year but none has been fruitful so far.

She believed that God would surely not withhold a child from her. She had been thought that Allah is merciful and beneficent. Though she and Dotun were not too religious, they held on to major Islamic creeds. It was after Bimpe’s marriage that she actually became a Moslem. At the orphanage where she grew up, they were free to practice any religion of their choice; but she had always been an open-minded person. Dotun’s family was a respectable Moslem family, she decided she was not going to be the black sheep, and was willing to give anything up now that she was going to have a family to call her own at last.

Bimpe remembered, painfully, how when she was almost ten years old, was to be adopted. But the man and his wife had an auto crash a week to the time and died. This memory brought tears to Bimpe – it did each time. Through the years, however, she had learnt to leave her misfortunes behind her.

Dotun was sure his wife was going to love the jewelry he bought for her, and he was right.

How did you read my mind? Bimpe asked after hugging him. I was just thinking I could do with a necklace one of these days. Thanks.

That is one thing – when two people live in harmony, they seem to know each other’s need.

    CHAPTER TWO

Her mother-in-law’s visit in the last couple of days left Bimpe really deep in thought. Dotun’s mother had arrived on Thursday evening and Bimpe was glad to see her. They got along quite well.

Mama, Dotun did not even tell me you were coming. Oh! You are so welcome. Bimpe hugged her mother-in-law as she took the elderly woman’s luggage.

He was not aware I would be coming. Did she sound rather distant? Bimpe had thought.

After making a meal for Mrs. Kadri, Bimpe had watched her eat and asked after her husband’s relatives.

When does Dotun usually come back? asked Mrs. Kadri, she sounded tired of small talk.

Oh, Bimpe checked the time. He comes around 7 O’clock. He should be here in about 30 minutes.

As she washed the dishes, Bimpe could not help wondering about the purpose of this visit. She knew her mother-in-law was a tough woman but warm at heart as well. She had single handedly trained her five kids after the death of their father. But she looked a bit withdrawn today, Bimpe thought, or was it just her own imagination? Oh! God, don’t let there be any trouble.

Dotun returned from work and was glad to see his mother. He was the youngest of her children. Mrs. Kadri had a real fondness for him.

They all sat chatting till late at night. Bimpe then withdrew to bed; she sensed that was what her mother-in-law was waiting for.

Bimpe tossed about in bed, unable to sleep and was still conscious when about an hour later, Dotun got into bed beside her and promptly fell asleep. Bimpe sighed. What had they been talking about? Was it anything to do with her – and her childlessness?

Mrs. Kadri spent two days with the couple and prepared to leave.

Oh I thought you’d stay with us for a longer period Mama, Bimpe said. She wished the tension that had suddenly developed between them would just disappear.

You people have refused to give me a reason to stay much longer. The house is … lonely. The last sentence ended is a whisper. The words shot through Bimpe, leaving her speechless.

Mrs. Kadri left but the tension she had brought remained. Bimpe was very nervous of whatever was coming next.

I hope nothing is wrong with the people at home, Bimpe broached on the subject the night after Mrs. Kadri left.

Dotun just grunted and rolled over on the bed. Getting to sleep these days was becoming increasingly difficult for Bimpe. Get hold of yourself woman or you’ll end up with hypertension, she told herself. But that did not calm her even. These past years have been incredible with Dotun in her life. She could still remember their first meeting. He was so handsome and awfully kind. She had found a brother, husband and friend – all in one man. The security that had eluded her for long was finally hers. All of these were now being threatened because of her inability to have a child.
