    Rain Droplets

Baby, please, don’t forget some milk, uttered Ntombi as she kissed her husband Freddie, before he dashed out of the car.

Every Sunday evening after church, they passed by this garage for some shopping.

Ntombi sat with her eyes gazing on a windscreen as if to count some rain droplets. It was those dewdrops that precede cold fronts. They were dropping as if they were reluctant, yet opening a wider gate to a blistering cold season. And that was the accurate showcase of the Pietermaritzburg weather.

Her mind was wholly absorbed in a song that was playing in the background. The song was Solution by Hillsong. Every word of the song was leaving a mark:

    Hey now

Fill our hearts with your compassion.

    Hey now,

As we hold to our confession…

    God, be the Solution

We will be your hands and be your feet.

The lyrics were wrecking her walls because they were echoing the sermon Pastor Bradley had just preached about 30 minutes ago. He challenged God’s children to be His hands and feet in the bleeding world.

Was she doing enough? she wondered. If not, what did she need to do?

As she was still assessing herself, the driver’s door opened, derailing her thoughts. It was as though Freddie had added a cold front to the grocery list. Ntombi reacted as though she had caught hypothermia. It was crystal clear: she was never going to get used to cold weather. Knowing this very well was her husband. It was no wonder he reached out for a hug. He knew his wet-through and icy clothes would perfectly exacerbate the situation.

It was at that moment that Ntombi shrieked, No, thanks! Instead, she projected her lips towards him to indicate she was strictly going for a kiss. They both chuckled.

After the coalition of icy and warm lips, their car zigzagged to their apartment. Her knees were knocking together under her long coat while her man was sweating in his shorts.

In a trice, they were at the gate where they greeted their simplex security guard.

They were new in this place. In no time, they would finish their first month in their 3-bedroom apartment. Before this, they had been renting a single-bedroom flat in Scottsville. They had decided to move into their new home in their eight-months of marriage. This was so they could be hosts. Also, a 3-bedroom apartment was strategic to the boy and a girl they were envisaging.

    Ntombi swished to the bedroom.

Coffee? offered Freddie from the kitchen.

    No, thanks.

One could hear that she was rummaging in their wardrobe.

"There’s no way you can refuse my coffee in that quivering state. If it means I need to get amabutho to force you, so be it."

They both cackled from different rooms, separated by the cream white wall. It stood tall and stout, glaring from renovations.

In no time, a Zulu girl showed up wrapped up in a dark grey Scotch blanket.
