Undoubtedly one of the major writers of the 20th century, Franz Kafka (1883-1924) is a complex writer: his works have given rise to many comments and interpretations. His texts namely reflect the alienation of the modern man, the mysterious yet implacable forces of society that govern his existence, as well as his futile quest for answers in a baffling world.
A German-speaking Jew and living in Prague, Kafka had to write at night, as during the day he had to work in an office. His success was posthumous, when his writings grew in popularity after his death from tuberculosis in 1924. Among them, the most famous are The Metamorphosis (1915) and The Trial (1925).
