Toby braced himself before taking another shot of the noxious brown liqueur. It didn't help, and he shivered in disgust anyway. Drinking shots in a seedy strip club on the edge of town wasn't exactly his idea of a good time. How he got roped into this kind of thing, he'd never know. He coughed to get the taste out of his mouth.

Can't handle your booze there, cowboy? Larry laughed and slapped his back hard enough to make Toby reach for the edge of the bar or slide off his stool.

It's not the alcohol. It's the fact that it tastes like cough syrup and cat piss mixed together, Toby grunted. He gave Larry a dirty look, but the other man just laughed.

Call it punishment for leap-frogging over me for this promotion.

That I believe, Toby said with a slow nod. He could understand Larry's jealousy. He was only twenty-five and had yet to be with the company for a full year. The handsome young man had made a splash in the I.T. Department in a very short time. Larry, balding, paunchy, and pushing forty, had seniority over him. But Larry hadn't reprogrammed the company's computers and increased productivity by eleven percent, either.

Look, I'm pissed, but you earned it, Larry shrugged.

Is that why you took me to a titty-bar? Toby wondered. Tall and athletic, with short black hair and smoky gray eyes, girls always seemed to adore him. He'd never been to a strip club before, he'd never understood the point. Not for the first time, he looked around curiously.
