    About the Author

    Chapter 1

Nell Langley stood in front of her mirror. She wished she could rip off her power suit and skip the interview altogether. Except she needed a job. She smoothed her blond hair and applied more red to her lips. You can do this. She repeated the words to her reflection a few more times, admiring the way her top and lipstick matched.

She walked out of her bedroom to find her sister, Shannon, lounging on her sofa. Shannon popped a chip in her mouth.

I can’t do this, Nell said, throwing herself on the armchair. She reached for the chips, but stopped, orange dust would glow on her dark skirt.

You can do this. If you don’t, you will have to live in my basement.

I don’t think Melissa would allow that.

She doesn’t have a choice, you are my sister, we won’t let you be homeless. But you don’t want to live in my basement, do you?

Nell groaned and stood. She put her hands on her hips and looked down at her big sister. They weren’t identical but similar blond hair, blue eyes, slightly too large nose, and curvy body. Okay fine, let’s go.

On the way Shannon asked her potential questions and Nell tried to answer while trying not to vomit all over Shannon’s car. That would be a poor way to pay back her sister for spending her day off driving her around because she didn’t have the money to insure her own vehicle.

Shannon parked in front of a high rise building that housed Stronghold Contractors offices for Calgary were located. Be back before you know it.

Don’t rush, Shannon said. Good luck.

Nell found the StrongHold Contractors offices occupied the third and fourth floors. She researched the shit out of the company when they contacted her for an interview. It wasn’t her first interview since she started job hunting, but it was one of her better prospects. This was only a satellite office, corporate headquarters was in Vancouver. But they were one of the largest companies for contractors in the province. It didn’t surprise her that their website was low on information for the accounting department. No one cared about who took care of the numbers when they were hiring a contractor.

She climbed the stairs to the third floor, grateful for the air-conditioning. It was early spring, not hot yet outside, but inside her body she was steaming with anxiety. Human Resources was her destination. Inside the office, they put her in an empty waiting room and offered a cup of coffee. She declined and sat on the edge of the plush red chair. She checked her top to make sure she was showing the right amount of cleavage. Too much would put off a woman interviewer, too little wouldn’t be attractive to a man.

They’re ready for you now, someone new informed her. She shot to her feet and shuffled behind the new woman back to the stairs and up to the accounting department. They showed her into a small room with a single table in it. Behind the table was one person she expected. And one she did not.

She expected the slightly overweight, balding man in his fifties. She didn’t expect the man with long eyelashes, bright eyes and a head of dark hair. She didn’t expect the suit that stretched over broad shoulders and tapered down to his waist. She didn’t expect the sudden dampness between her legs. Or the cold chill that followed when she shook his hand.

Josh Sharpe. She heard that above the whooshing in her ears. She didn’t know how she sat up straight and answered the questions. Air-conditioning be damned, this man had the potential to melt her with a look. Or an order from his lips.

The older man, George Cohen, was the head of accounting. Mr. Sharpe’s role in the department was less explicit. But since he did most of the talking, it was clear he was in charge not Mr. Cohen.

By the end of the interview she hated Mr. Sharpe It wasn’t his good looks, it was his arrogance. He looked her up and down for fuck’s sake. They shook hands again, sending a tingle straight to her pussy. He was a man who knew what he wanted, and he was used to getting it. The type of man who did not know what the word ‘no’ meant.

Not that she would want to say no to a man like him. She wanted his head between her legs. She wanted… she pushed her desires aside. She wanted to leave, have a cold shower, and find a job at another company. She would never ever ever ever ever get involved with someone she worked with again. Never.

Do you have any questions? Mr. Sharpe asked.

She swallowed the lump of anger. She turned on her serene voice. No. No more questions. She thought she had asked a few during the interview that seemed relevant. Seriously, if she bombed the interview, it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. She would rather live in her sister’s basement than work with this guy.

The two men exchanged glances and Josh nodded. Salary is $55, 000 plus bonuses and benefits. We expect employees to work hard while they are here, but not kill themselves while doing so. We expect you to be here during regular office hours. Eight to five thirty. An hour for lunch, Mr. Cohen said.

All right. Was the interview over? She nodded dumbly at them.

When can you start, Miss Langley?

    What?

Start, when can you start? Mr. Sharpe grinned at her shock.

Oh, uh, you’re offering me the job? Her eyebrows plowed together.

That is correct. Are you interested?

    Right now?

That’s also correct, Cohen said. The two men shared a bemused glance.

Oh. All right. Right? Yes. Sure. Please. Thank you. She smoothed her skirt with her palms to dry them. I can start tomorrow. If you want. I’ve… been out of work for a time.

As afraid as she was of Josh, she couldn’t afford to give up the job. She would like working here. She could learn to ignore him.

Welcome to the company. Josh will return you to HR and get your paperwork started. George shook her hand then ambled out of the room.

Josh came around the desk and walked out the door. He waited for Nell. Welcome to the company. You weren’t expecting to be hired were you?

It’s unusual to receive a job offer during the interview. So no, I wasn’t expecting it. She gritted her teeth. Were you?

I knew you would be hired the minute I laid eyes on you.

She made the mistake of glancing up and meeting his dark eyes. His eyes weren’t as dark now that he was close enough to breathe on. They had gold flecks around the irises. She could spend a lifetime counting them.

Her breath caught as he grabbed around her waist and pulled her against him. She gasped as he crushed her body against the hard planes of his. You were about to run into a desk.

She looked behind her. Clearly she had been in imminent danger. She pushed herself away from him and bumped into a desk. Shi-oot. The pain radiated from her thigh up into her pelvis. At least she hoped the tingling was pain not excitement.

It’s okay, I’m a grown-up, he said. It gave me an excuse to touch you.

I’ll be careful not to give you any in the future, she said, moving away from the desk and him.

I’m sure if I look hard enough I can find the sexual harassment sticker in the handbook, she said, not-so-subtle warning to back off.

    Touché. Stairs or elevator?

Makes no difference to me, Nell said. Whichever is quicker.

Stairs it is. It’s just two floors down. Also we can have another private moment in the stairwell.

She followed him to the doorway. He opened the door and made a mock bow. Ladies first.

She rolled her eyes and stepped into the stairwell. She didn’t look over her shoulder as she spoke to him. I have a strict policy against getting involved with coworkers.

    Mm. Do you?

Yes. She couldn’t help but glance at him to gauge his reaction.

He raised his eyebrows but his face was neutral. Bad experience I presume, he said, mildly.

He moved past her and up the stairwell. Come on HR is waiting for us. And despite what George said, ten hours days are not uncommon around here. At least for me.

An hour later, Nell returned to Shannon’s car. Her head swam with thoughts of Josh and the way he looked at her.

How did it go? Shannon asked.

I got the job. She frowned out at the building.

You don’t look happy about it.

    It was unsettling.

Are you sure you should take this job? Shannon pulled away from the curb into traffic. What was unsettling?

    Josh Sharpe.

    Josh Sharpe?

Nell rubbed her temples, trying to break the spell she was obviously under. No matter how good looking, no matter how he flirted with her, no matter how strong an attraction between them, there would never be anything between her and Josh Sharpe.

He interviewed me. Offered me the job. Not his boss, him. And he flirted me with me.

    Flirted? Your boss?

    He’s not my boss.

    But he interviewed you?

    Yes.

    He’s your boss.

He made it clear he is not my boss. He also made it very clear he would be interested in more than a work relationship.

    Oh, Nell.

I told him no. Nell’s heart fell. Did Shannon think she’d be that stupid? To screw around at work again. No happening. I won’t make the same mistake twice.

    That’s the end?

I’m not sure it will be.

You can report him for harassment.

Maybe. He backed off after I told him. Sort of backed off. The look in his eyes showed that he might be merely biding his time. He could easily wear down her defenses. She looked at her sister. She might need a lot of strength. But she also needed a job. And it was rather difficult when your only employment history ended in being fired, for performance issues.

Fucking Craig, as one final fuck you to her, he screwed her entire career plan over. If she was the vengeful type, she’d screw him over. But there were kids involved and they didn’t deserve to be dragged into the shit storm she created.

Every time he looks at you, imagine he’s Craig.

Josh was prettier than Craig. Longer eyelashes, softer skin, and sculpted lips. He was a lot younger, probably only a few years older than her, compared to a decade older.

Easier said than done. Craig was nice to look at it. I have trouble being mad at that face.

Do you not remember what he did to you?

I know. He dumped me, then fired me to make sure I wouldn’t take it to his wife and kids. She dropped her chin to her chest in shame. And you can say you told me so, that he would be a horrible husband, that sleeping with a married man was a bad idea. None of that stopped her from loving him. Or missing him, even six months later.

I could, but I won’t. Shannon rubbed Nell’s shoulder. He hated me.

Because you didn’t like him. The first time you met him, you threatened him.

Because you were fighting with him, and you hadn’t told me he was married. He let that slip out to me. Me. Your sister. I wanted to kill him.

    Maybe you should have.

Maybe you should have. Shannon made a sour face at Nell.

Doesn’t matter. I will not sleep with someone I work with ever again. Doesn’t matter how good looking that someone is. The thought of Josh’s dark eyes looking her over made a new wave of desire flow from her. She made a note to keep extra panties in her purse. At least until her body’s reaction to him wore off.

    Is he good looking?

Underwear model. He’s a cocky asshole. Once he finds out I’m not budging from my no work sex rule, he’ll lose interest. he’ll probably lose interest before that. He probably hasn’t spent more than a week with one woman.

I will keep you accountable to that promise.

Good. I need someone to do that. Keep her from accidentally falling on Josh’s penis. She cringed as Shannon parked in front of her building. She didn’t want to think about anything related to Josh. Or his penis.

Her libido, put on the back burner for the last six months, really wanted to think about his penis. And his mouth. And his hands. She bit back a whimper as she imagined the things his eyes promised her. She looked at her accountability partner, who stared at her. Shannon raised a skeptical eyebrow. Nell needed to get away now. Go to her room and relieve the tension with her vibrator.

Thank you for the ride. I appreciate it. I can drive my car again now that I’m employed. When she was in her apartment, she’d get her insurance back.

I don’t mind driving you around. Shannon leaned over and hugged her sister.

Nell hugged back. Thank you. I love you. I will keep my distance from him.

I know you will. You are wise to the tricks assholes play.

Yeah, she was. Except, what if Josh wasn’t an asshole? What if he really wanted her? She rolled her eyes at herself. He wanted her body, he didn’t know her. He didn’t know her. Even if she was interested in him, she wasn’t interested in being a one-night stand. She wanted a real relationship with the next guy. After she got her life back on track with this job.

She slid out of the car and closed the door. Right, she wouldn’t think about Josh or his penis any further today.

Josh woke up with morning wood and a name on his lips. The wood wasn’t surprising, the name on his lips surprised him. Nell Langley. In their brief acquaintance, she intrigued him.

Her high breasts, her perky ass, and especially how she demurred to him. She was two steps away from kneeling before him.

He’d look into her employment history and figure out why she was averse to getting involved with a coworker. Sure it was a gray area, but she beckoned to him. Besides, he wasn’t looking for any strings attached, well except tying her to his bed. Those were the kinds of strings he could get into.

He shoved his hand into his briefs and imagined her kneeling before him. She would look up at him, her big beautiful eyes staring up at him. Please sir, from her lips, almost a whisper. A plea. He’d love to make her beg for his cock.

She had perfect lips, dressed up with red lipstick and now wrapped around his cock, pleasuring him with her mouth. Little moans of pleasure coming from her throat.

Real moans of pleasure came from his mouth as he stroked himself faster. Perhaps if he masturbated once before he went to the office to meet Nell he might keep his erection from being noticeable when he saw her today.

His schedule for the day didn’t have time to jack off in his office. Sometimes he had time, but not today.

Under his desk. He imagined her crawling across his office on all fours and then sliding under his desk. That was too much, he exploded in his hand.

He swung by his favorite coffee shop outside the office building. The barista was far too young for him, but she giggled at his double entendres, flirted back, and gave him the occasional free coffee or free upgrade. It gave any bad morning a little boost. Today he didn’t need a boost because Nell was arriving in his sphere. But he wanted a good cup of coffee, so she stopped.

He’d back off hitting on her, get to know her first. Also, he wanted to research her former employers and figure out why she thought banging a coworker was bad. There was no rule against it here, he wasn’t her direct supervisor. He needed to snoop into her background, figure out what type of woman she was, and what type of guy she would be in to. Maybe she wasn’t into guys.

He discounted that idea on the wait for the elevator. She would have said ‘no men’ if she preferred women. She would have said that when she refused his advances in the stairwell, she said she didn’t fuck people at work, not that she wasn’t into his gender.

Twenty minutes before Nell was due to arrive. Not enough to be productive, too much time to hang around the lobby waiting for her. He went to his desk and logged in to his email. A few clicks led him to her resume in his email, forwarded from George.

He searched her most recent employment, which ended six months prior. Nothing interesting came up. He found her picture on the second website. A picture of the accounting department, including Craig Nelson, her former boss, standing so close she would feel an erection if he had one.

So sexual harassment or an affair gone wrong?

He recorded their phone number on a sticky note and put it on the corner of his computer. A glance at his watch showed he was late, making him hustle down the stairs to meet her.

She had been in his thoughts since she submitted under his gaze. She probably didn’t even know she had done it. The moment she walked into the office for her interview she had his attention. The way she met his gaze then looked down screamed submissive to him. The moment she walked in George and the office melted away, and he imagined her kneeling before him, begging for his cock. Great, so much for no erection Tuesday.

Josh’s height gave him an advantage to see over most people’s heads in the lobby. He saw the back of her head, standing near the front entrance. She turned with a confused look on her face until she met his eyes she looked relieved to see a familiar face. He kept his face neutral, maybe a little stern. She dipped her head, clasped her hands together in front of her.

He imagined tying her forearms together. Stretching them over her head and pinning her with a look. Ordering her to keep her hands up. What would her breasts look like?

He shook his head. That was enough fantasizing. It wasn’t like thinking about sex was unusual. He liked sex, and he liked women. He was good at both. But he’d been without either of those for a long time. He’d been longer without a woman who interested him, who turned him on with a look, without someone who made him fantasize about kneeling before him. A fantasy that made him come.

Why was he so attracted to the one woman who said she didn’t want him? He’d leave her alone, but all her actions screamed she wanted him too. The way she leaned into him when he talked, the way she smiled at him when she thought he wasn’t looking, and the way her voice got low and almost husky when she spoke to him.

No rule in company policy prevented them from a relationship. He wasn’t her boss. They’d have to be discreet and not let it affect work. He didn’t want to get her fired, regardless of how it went for him. She shouldn’t be affected by who she fucked.

On the other hand, he hired her to know what was under her skirt. He probably committed a sin for that. But George was so easy to handle. He didn’t manipulate things on a whim. Nell was one of the better people they’d interviewed, but her looks swayed his favor. And how she licked her lips when she looked at him. That part didn’t hurt.

He stepped out of the elevator and spotted her right away. She wasn’t looking his direction, giving him the chance look her over. She wore a skirt again, black that showed off her legs, and her top was maroon. It was almost as low cut as the one she wore yesterday. Just enough to tantalize him with the swell of her breasts.

He slid his eyes up to her
