SPECIAL-PURPOSE MILLINERY
NATURE AND IMPORTANCE
1. Aside from the hats that Fashion demands as the seasons change, there are certain types of hats and head coverings that are intended to be used for distinct purposes or to be worn on specific occasions. For example, there are veils to be worn for motoring and for such events as confirmation and weddings, caps for various purposes, and hats for riding, motoring, skating, and other sports. Such millinery results from customs and conventions and is recognized as a necessary part of the scheme of millinery fashions.
2. While most women require but few hats to fill their needs, in that not all of them have the same interests and consequently the same demands for head wear, it is well for every woman to know and appreciate the sort of hat that each occasion calls for especially if she desires always to be properly groomed in this respect.
No hat or cap is absolutely correct for all times; veils are appropriate at only certain times and usually for only certain purposes, hats for garden parties differ from those for shopping or business wear. Thus, a knowledge of what to wear on the head for different occasions is as important as familiarity with the kinds of dresses that are appropriate.
3. As is true of all millinery, hats and other head coverings intended for special purposes are constantly undergoing style changes. But once their purpose and the construction principles that govern them are understood, it will be possible to have millinery that is not only suitable for special occasions but stylish as well. The models given here are therefore conservative ones; but from them you will gain definite ideas of the requirements of special-purpose millinery and be prepared to select or produce millinery that will be appropriate for the special occasions that will arise from time to time.
VEILS
4. The veil is truly symbolical of very ancient customs and has many beautiful traditions credited to it. In early times, veils were used by the women of civilized countries to cover their faces from men and in this way served as a screen to separate women from the outside world. In this sense, also, the veil is used to cover the holy altars in the East and conceal them from earthly things. Numerous scriptural allusions to the veil reveal its use in Biblical times.
The veil also played an important part in the vanities of the ancient Greeks and Romans, its mystery, charm, and attractiveness finding their origin in the ancient countries and being perpetuated down through the centuries without losing any of their original value. While it is true that we can trace the origin of the veil to the first days of civilization, it is interesting to find that this is still a cherished article of apparel equally dear to the hearts of women of nearly all nationalities.
5. The Mohammedan women wear the veil on their face when they go in public to protect them from the gaze of strange men. Among the Spanish women, the veil is considered an important part of
