    Chapter 1

Jodi Appling's body ached all over. It was full of bruises and cuts. And she felt like she couldn't walk another step from the total body fatigue.

Of course she loved it and couldn't live without it. This was her life six days a week, ten months out of the year.

As a gymnast at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, the pretty and popular young woman was grateful for what ever she had in life.

She worked for things. It was part of her DNA. She was hard hat and lunch pail all the way. Her dad was in construction and her mom was an elementary school cafeteria cook.

Even in Bakersfield, it was tight making what they made.

She took a chance on Loyola knowing it didn't have the financial backing in their gymnastics program. Her favorite aunt who died tragically when Jodi was a little girl went there. And they had a great foreign language program. She wanted to be an international or entertainment lawyer.

But Loyola and living in LA were pricey.

Then a few months into the season the thing she always knew could happen, did. Budget cuts left her with no scholarship and scrambling to find a way to pay
