I believe in Happily Ever After. I'm always looking for the silver lining and hope to find a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. I find life absolutely hysterical sometimes and try not to take myself too seriously. I also love watching sports- football, hockey, baseball. I read romance, but I also love a good mystery thriller. Love's Road Home - G. Whitman

    CHAS

    Chapter 1

    ––––––––

Damn, her head hurt. She hadn’t even opened her eyes yet, and the first thought Desiree had was she needed some aspirin for this pounding headache. She opened her eyes and quickly closed them again. When she did open her eyes, it was almost directly in the sun. Desiree realized she was outside and lying on a blanket.

Desiree rubbed her head and turned on her side. She sat up and slowly opened her eyes to an open expanse of grass and some trees. Was she in a park?

Where is everybody, she said out loud to herself, and where the hell am I?

She continued to rub her head. What had happened? Desiree searched her thoughts, but wasn’t finding any answer.

The red wool blanket looked familiar. Like one she slept with as a kid. Her mother worked in a wool mill before her mother and father were married. They had a lot of these woolen blankets. Desiree liked this one because of the color and the tied tassels all the way around. Why was she lying on an old blanket in the middle of – where?

Desiree stood to stretch and look around. I’m out in the freaking country? she asked herself, surprised at the concept. Why am I out in the country?

Farmland to her right. It looked like rows of corn. Could she make out a house on the hill behind it? Stretched beyond were pastures. From here she couldn’t quite see. Horses? Cows?

Besides the horses and cows, she saw no living creatures. This was odd and creepy, if she thought long enough. Desiree shook out the blanket and folded it. She would walk toward the house. In case it was farther than it looked, the blanket might come in handy if she needed to rest or sleep.

Standing on the dirt road, Desiree’s plan was to walk toward the house. She thought she might go in the other direction, but her feet wouldn’t move that way. They would move forward. That was weird. Thank god this wasn’t a yellow brick road. If she saw a scarecrow, tin man, or cowardly lion, she’d run for the hills. If her feet would let her.

Desiree wished she brought a water bottle with her. This could be a long journey. A babbling brook or river would be okay. Running water usually meant a good source of drinking water. Then she heard something very faint.

    Beep... Beep...Beep

What the hell was that? She stopped to listen, but didn’t hear it again. Time to walk.

Looking around as she walked, Desiree found it beautiful. Almost like the HD color she got on her TV. The greens were vibrant and popped out at her. Like when Dorothy went from the black and white of Kansas to the Technicolor of Oz. Great. Wizard of Oz thoughts again.

She did find a brook and drank from it. If she got sick and died, who would notice? Would anybody? Why didn’t this make sense? Her head pounded.

This was some serious country if the one house was all she could see for miles. Country where? The more she thought, the more absolutely nothing made sense. She hoped someone or something at the house would help clarify where she was.

The walking wasn’t difficult and she saw a sign up ahead. ‘WELCOME TO YOUTAUPIA.’ What? Desiree sounded it out - Utopia.

Utopia? This has got to be a joke. Why not just say NIRVANA or SHRANGI LA?

This was too messed up to think about anymore.

The walk to the house took about two hours, Desiree guessed. The sun was warm and felt good on her face. The actual walk up to the house had been a slight incline and left her panting slightly. It was a pretty, white two-story farmhouse with a wraparound porch. Comfortable chairs and a porch swing framed both sides of the large front door.

Shit. She was here. Desiree got butterflies. Fear of the unknown? No doubt, if there was anyone in the house, they would have seen her coming up the long driveway. If something nefarious was going to happen to her, it would have by now.

She knocked. Hello? she called out.

The door opened and he smiled brightly Hello. You made good time walking.

Thanks. Was that the right answer? Desiree looked around.

Would you like to come in?

I’m good here. Thanks. She didn’t want to sound unfriendly. This guy looked familiar somehow. Good looking too. Later. I’m sorry, I’m a little confused. Can you tell me where I am?

    Youtaupia. This is my farm.

    Youtaupia... what?
