Mail Order Bride - Kat Carson

    Chapter 1

    Chapter 1

Ruby stood outside the milliner’s store and gazed at the beautiful hats and bonnets inside with a sigh. Such finery was quite beyond her means. She ran her fingers along the limp and overly-washed ribbons that fell from her own bonnet. Once a pretty blue, the color had faded to a greyish hue, the material threadbare and worn. She knew she should not covet the hats in the window display when there was so much more to concern her, but sometimes she needed to be reminded that she was still a young woman, albeit a young woman with a mighty large problem.

Mama! Mama! Little Eliza tugged at Ruby’s hand. Mama, I’m hungry. Can we go home? The little girl pulled her mother away from the window, and Ruby allowed herself to be led along the dusty street.

She trailed slowly along the boardwalk of her hometown behind her daughter, deep in thought. Life had taken a turn for the worst, and though she trusted that the Lord had a bigger plan for her, she could not help but worry.

Ruby had met and married Tommy when she was just eighteen. It was true love, and Ruby had counted her blessings every day. Tommy had built them both a little house, complete with two rooms and a porch, and Ruby spent her days making the house cozy for them. With the arrival of little Eliza twelve months later, she thought she would burst from happiness.

However, their happiness was not to last. Tommy had cut his hand while sawing wood one day, and had not paid much mind to the wound. With near lightning speed, the cut had become infected, blood poisoning had set in, and days later, Ruby lost the only man she was sure she would ever love. The doctor had done all he could, but in the end, he shook his head and told Ruby she must be brave. Tommy was in the Lord’s hands now.

Tommy had passed soon after, and Ruby thought she may just die from grief. However, she had three-year-old Eliza to care for, so she continued on as best she could. Now twenty-two years old, and just six months after Tommy’s death, Ruby was beginning to realize the dire straits that they were in. Without Tommy’s support, the little family struggled to make ends meet, and money was always short.

Mama! Eliza stopped outside the general store and looked up at Ruby imploringly. Mama, can I have some candy?

Ruby looked down at the dear sweet face of her daughter, her eyes so much like Tommy’s that it made her heart ache. She allowed her daughter to pull her into the store, though she knew she could scarcely afford to waste a penny on candy.

Hello Ruby, and hello to you too, Miss Eliza the proprietor of the general store, Mr. Smithson, greeted them as he smiled at the pair. You’re looking mighty pretty today, Miss Eliza.

The little girl giggled and pressed her nose against the glass front of the candy-filled shop counter. Mr. Smithson looked over her head at Ruby, not attempting to hide the concern in his eyes.

How are you going, Ruby? he asked softly. The townsfolk had been very kind to her after Tommy’s death, but they had their own lives to lead and their own troubles to deal with. Ruby appreciated all they had done for her, and she knew they were kindhearted and concerned, but concern couldn’t put food on the table or clothes on backs.

Ruby did not have family to lean on. Her father and brother had left to find their fortune in the West many years ago, and no one had heard from them
