Jake Maddox

Who is Jake Maddox? Athlete, author, world-traveler – or all three? He has surfed in Hawaii, scuba-dived in Australia, and climbed the mountains of Peru and Alaska. His books range from the most popular team sports to outdoor activities to survival adventures and even to auto racing. His exploits have inspired numerous writers to walk in his footsteps – literally! Each of his stories is stamped with teamwork, fair play, and a strong sense of self-worth and discipline. Always a team-player, Maddox realizes it takes more than one man (or woman) to create a book good enough for a young reader. He hopes the lessons learned on the court, field, or arena and the champion sprinter pace of his books can motivate kids to become better athletes and lifelong readers.

    CHAPTER 1

    SERIOUS SHADE

Woo-hoo! I’ve got you beat this time, Gary, Leggie said to his friend.

But, when Gary pressed the turbo button on his video game controller his red Ferrari zoomed ahead of Leggie’s yellow Lamborghini. You’re too over-confident, man.

Pierce, who’d just started at their school a few weeks before winter break, laughed as Gary’s car pulled ahead of Leggie’s. You stink, Leggie. My grandma could beat you.

Leggie frowned, but he was too focused on the race to answer. He wanted to give the new kid a chance, but Pierce seemed more interested in throwing shade than being friends. He was built like a linebacker and had a blond crew cut.

Leggie and Gary had been playing this new racing video game at Gary’s house every day after school for the past few weeks, and this was the closest Leggie had gotten to winning. He came to a sharp turn and saw his car heading into the wall on the side of the track. He eased up on the accelerator for a second. Gary, though, handled the turn perfectly and took an even bigger lead.

A few seconds later, Gary’s car crossed the finish line.

You got lucky again! Leggie said to his friend.

Yeah, just like you got lucky in Regionals last season, Gary
