1. INTRODUCTION
The disease, diabetes mellitus is generally called as diabetes. The Greek word diabainein (former name of diabetes) means ‘a siphon’, referring to the excessive urination associated with the disease. In Latin, mellitus means ‘honey’ that is referred to the sweet smell and taste of the patient’s urine.
New report says that 450 million people worldwide have diabetes. It was 108 million only in 1980. If this trend continues, over 700 million people will be affected with diabetes by 2025.
In United States, about 30 million people have diabetes and 86 million have pre-diabetes. It is estimated that over 4 million people in UK are living with diabetes at present.
2. ROLE OF INSULIN IN OUR BODY
The sugar content from our food is converted to glucose and it is passed to the blood. Beta cells which are situated in pancreas gland, produce a hormone called insulin. Insulin stimulates muscle cells and other body cells to take up glucose from the blood and convert the glucose to glycogen and store it. By this process insulin keeps the glucose level in the blood at a normal size.
For different body activities, body cells convert that glycogen to glucose and use it as fuel.
3. WHAT IS DIABETES?
Diabetes is a condition featuring unusually high levels of glucose in the bloodstream. Glucose comes from the digestion of starchy foods such as bread, rice,
