    Three days. That’s how long Julia had been shipwrecked on this deserted island. It felt like she had been there a lot longer but there were only three tallies on the wall of the cave she had been hiding. Three tallies meant three days.

    Only four days ago, Julia had been leisurely relaxing on a catamaran. The lazy trip around the Gulf was supposed to be relaxing, a break from the fast paced life of the city. In all fairness, it had been relaxing. Right up until that storm had rolled in.

    Julia berated herself for the millionth time as she remembered brushing off the rental agent when he wanted to go over safety protocols. She had grown up on the ocean, she was well aware of how to manage a boat in a summer squall. Her arrogance and impatience had come around to bite her in the ass because that storm had been as far from a summer squall as possible.

    The waves tore the boat to pieces. Before Julia could do more than throw on her discarded lifejacket, it was sinking. Julia was tossed around like a cork. The thick mast had dragged her under the water as it hit the ocean with a deafening slap. For a precious moment, she had been sure that she was about to die.

    She had no idea how she had lived. But the next thing she knew, she was waking up on a blistering sand beach. Her clothing was stiff with dried salt water and her lifejacket was tangled around her like a vice. Julia had sat on the beach in a daze until she heard the sound of rustling coming from behind her. She had not survived a near drowning only to be eaten by a wild animal.
