    Chapter One

The Earl’s estates were located in a remote parcel of land. The manor was large, a boorish piece of architecture that arose out of a large expanse of rolling hills. One had to travel for days to reach the seat of his holdings. When out of the Earl’s earshot people often remarked that it was dreadfully cumbersome to reach. But it fit the Earl perfectly.

The seclusion allowed the Earl to freely practice the lifestyle he was accustomed to. His lifestyle was often whispered about amongst the more gauche members of the ton, no polite member would dare be caught speaking of it. The Earl was infamous for his, alleged, bedroom activities. Although, if the rumors were true, his activities were rarely kept to the bedroom.

Despite these rumors, or more accurately because of them, the Earl was the toast of the ton. The men flocked to him hoping to be allowed to join in his games. And the more daring women approached him for the same reason. Even the matrons of the ton were drawn to him.

He was charismatic. He was intriguing. The Earl knew how to lead a person down the path of debauchery with a smile on their face. He was the cause of many a maiden’s ruin.

And it was all of these reasons and more that the Earl had a rather large stable of willing bed partners tucked away at his ancestral mansion. Although, to call the men and women living at the Earl’s manor bed partners would be to paint them in the wrong light. They were a harem. Acquisitions who had willing sold themselves based on the promise of pleasure. Of surrender. Of ownership. It was surprising how many individuals relinquished themselves willing into the Earl’s hands.

However, the Earl was a collector at heart. He searched diligently for unique personalities, for new experiences to savor at leisure within his harem. When the need to acquire was upon him, he was a relentless hunter. Which is what brought him to the seat of polite society, London, this season.

The season was in full swing. England’s rich and influential families having made their way to the capital weeks ago, the opening nights at the playhouses long forgotten and this year’s debutantes already presented to the King. The last point being well in the Earl’s favor. He had had his fair share of ivory clad innocents when he was a lad. A few of them were tucked away in his country estate. Seducing fresh faced youths was something that had lost its excitement. No, the Earl was looking for something he had long desire but had yet to capture; the unmarried bluestocking.

Many women left London at the end of the season without a husband. An unlucky few made it through multiple laps around the marriage mart without a husband. And an even unluckier few were put firmly on the shelf after too many unsuccessful seasons. Some hid in the country. Some stayed within their families. Some became employed as governesses or companions. Whatever their circumstances, all of these women seemed to thirst for life experience after years of being stifled under polite society’s strict dictates. They wore modest dresses, kept conversations polite and every single one of them kept their deepest desires hidden.

The Earl adored bluestockings. They embodied everything he loved about the chase. They were difficult prey after years of moral conditioning. But they were always sublimely willing in the end. It was always a surprise to discover what lay at their core once they submitted themselves to his hand. He had taken one or two in his lifetime but none had been willing to accept his patronage.

His prey this season was one Josephine Black. Josephine Black was only one step above untitled gentry. Her family hailed from the countryside and like most country families was large. Her eldest brother had married when their father had passed away securing the family legacy with a brood of his own. The rest of the Black siblings were left to find their own way in the world. While Josephine was by no means unattractive, with her sable tresses and sapphire eyes she was quite striking, she was by far the most unassuming of the Black sisters.

Season after season Josephine had been passed by in favor of more vocal women. After observing the woman, the Earl was not entirely convinced that this was not a deliberate move on Josephine’s part. Which hinted at deep waters under that guise of a country miss.

Try as he might, the Earl had yet to gain any evidence as to what drove Josephine headlong into spinsterhood.

The Earl had been working his charms on her for the last fortnight with only a margin of success. She was weakening in her resolve though. The last time the pair had exchanges barbs, the little minx had kissed him. In the middle of a hallway. What a sweet, innocent kiss it had been. For all her bold action belied, Miss Josephine Black was untried in all matters masculine. She had leaped at him with the ferocity of a lioness only to hesitate and fumble when their lips had touched. It made the Earl hard just thinking about it.

But the Earl could still feel her hesitation. He knew one of the major worries holding her back was her position as a hired companion. Her livelihood depended on her innocence. Her reputation had to be above reproach. If she were to be compromised, she would be fired and ruined women were easy prey in London. Josephine was right to be hesitant. But the Earl was not some young buck who would leave a woman to fend for herself on the streets. He just needed to convince Josephine that he was to be trusted.

Even with that very real fear driving her, the little minx had practically jumped him at the Hartshorne’s ball two nights ago. Which had given the Earl hope that his next move would work out in his favor. Place the idea in her mind, then cut the leading strings he thought with a devilish smile. Yes, the Earl was going to force her hand.

Maneuvering through the crush of bodies, the Earl went in search of his prey. Almack’s was quite popular among those looking to find spouses amongst the ton. It was too tame for his taste but it was precisely the
