CHAPTER 1
FENG SHUI YOUR BUSINESS
So, how are things going in your business? Could it be better? Would you like more business? Do you need more customers? Are your phones ringing? Are your employees happy and stable? Are you putting in too many hours and making too little profit for your effort?
Is your work environment pleasant? Do you like your job? Are you looking for a new one? Are you up for a promotion? Are you about to give the presentation of a lifetime?
What about your life? Overall, could you honestly say that you have achieved a happy balance between the amount of time you devote to your work, your family and loved ones and your free time? Are you living the life you want or is your business in control?
Life happens! Any of these questions can occur to us at one time or another. From the perspective of Feng Shui, success in business means that the life force, Qi, is flowing smoothly throughout your office, creating balance and harmony. The situations life brings you are met with confidence and ease.
WHAT IS QI? WHAT IS FENG SHUI?
Life is filled with a variety of experiences we encounter on many levels: intellectually, emotionally, psychologically and physically. For the most part, we respond to our experiences with actions that make us feel either satisfied or stressed out. Remember when you made that last credit and collections call? Or, when you were introducing your work to a potential new client? Or, when you had a serious meeting with your accountant about your finances? These are examples of stressful experiences. But what about when you took a lucrative order or a valuable customer thanked you for your work? The feeling of satisfaction and pride in your work is a positive and uplifting experience.
Stress or satisfaction represent the types of energy at work in our businesses and offices every day. Challenging or rewarding experiences form part of the Universal energy flow in our lives. The Chinese describe the flow of energy with the word: Qi. (You may see this word spelled Ch’i, Chi, Ji, or the way it is spelled in this book, Qi. In every instance it is pronounced chee
.)
When we enter a well-designed, organized and fully functional office space, there is a sense of calm. We feel certain that our business will be carried out with ease, that our requirements will be met and that we are dealing with an accomplished professional. When we enter a messy, disorganized business area and see the owner and employees rushing about, stressed out, short-tempered or distracted, we wonder if our needs will be met if the projects we are entrusting them with will be carried out to our specifications. Will the work get done on time and can we rely on the result?
Qi is everywhere in our Earth’s environments, in our small or bustling communities, in our businesses (small or huge), in our personal lives and in ourselves. Qi is the balance we all attempt to achieve as we combine the Yin (feminine, yielding energy) and Yang (masculine, penetrating force) energies in our lives and in our businesses. You may have heard that sex and money make the world go around – well, it is actually Qi that makes the world hum and pulsate with life and vigor.
However, just as every coin has two sides (heads and tails), the energy of life, i.e. Qi, also has two sides. There is a disruptive, chaotic side of Qi
