    Book Two: Emily’s Chance

    Chapter One

Emily was cowering behind the desk in her bedroom. She could hear her father outside, screaming at her mother. There was a thump as her mother hit the ground. Rage filled Emily and she wanted to run out there and go after her dad, tell him he was a bully and a terrible person, but she knew better. He would only go after her next. Emily pressed herself against her bedroom wall and shut her eyes. You just have to wait for it to pass, she told herself, it’ll pass with time.

But then her heart swooped. Her father was calling for her now. She could hear him looking for her. Any moment now, Emily would be next. He would be coming for her.

She woke up suddenly, drenched in sweat. Emily looked around the room quickly, but realized she wasn’t at home. No, she was in New York City, in a tiny apartment with a view of a brick wall. She wasn’t near her dad anymore. He couldn’t get to her here.

Knowing she wouldn’t be able to sleep, she got out of bed and went to the bathroom. Sareh, her roommate, wasn’t home, and the clock above the stove showed three in the morning. Emily splashed cool water on her face, trying to calm her rapid heartbeat. It had been a long time since she had had a nightmare about her father.

Her father was a terrible alcoholic who had often hit her mother, and then later on, Emily herself. He was fond of mind games as well, pointing out that Emily wasn’t good at anything and would end up doing nothing with her life. She had struggled through her father for years, working dead-end jobs to save up to move here. She had left without saying goodbye to him, only telling her mother she’d miss her and would hear from her when her mom deemed it safe enough.

Leaving behind her mom had been the hardest thing she had ever done. Emily didn’t want to imagine the fall-out she had caused by suddenly leaving like that. She hadn’t heard from her mother yet, but didn’t want to text her. She knew her dad checked her mother’s phone, and if he got ahold of her number…

And now Emily was letting everything explode in her face over a guy. Her boss. She was losing sight of the goal of being a successful writer. Instead, Emily had let her boss kiss her and become upset when she realized he had a girlfriend. It was so stupid, and she was angry at herself.

It had been one week since Alec, her billionaire boss, had kissed her. It had been a perfect kiss, in the empty offices of the magazine floor, with the city sparkling behind her like a jewel that held real promise. And now the memory was tainted by his gorgeous girlfriend, Selena. Emily had been successfully avoiding Alec the rest of the week, turning into a ninja whenever he came to their floor to check on the progress of the magazine. The offices were all completely set up now, and work on the first issue had begun. When Emily could stop worrying about Alec, she found herself loving every second she spent learning from Jacob. They were getting their cover story today, and Emily didn’t want to make any mistakes.

She trudged back to bed and hoped for the best in getting back to sleep.

The office was humming with energy. Interns were running around, handing coffee off to people. Emily felt grateful that Alec had put her with Jacob, but frowned when she remembered it was only because of the kiss. Had she kissed her way to this internship position? Emily shook her head and stepped into Jacob’s office, who looked up from his computer.

    Hey! You’re here early.

    Couldn’t sleep.

This might cheer you up, come here.

Emily went over to his computer and looked at his screen. He had pictures of gorgeous beaches up on the monitor, with lush jungles behind them.

What is this? Looks like the set of Jurassic Park.

Close. It’s Costa Rica. I think they filmed that there, didn’t they?

Emily shrugged. Dinosaurs are number one on my irrational fear list.

I’m not even going to ask why you have one of those. Anyway, this is what the cover shoot is going to be about. The beaches of Costa Rica and how they can be the best place for a man to clear his head.

Cool. For rich men, right? For instance, I don’t think like…my co-workers at the coffee shop... are going to be able to afford going to Costa Rica to clear their heads.

Jacob was shaking his head, No, Emily, don’t you understand? We’re going to Costa Rica to nail this cover story!

Oh…oh! Oh my God. Really? I have to find my passport. I got it once when we went to Canada – it doesn’t matter. Wow! Emily couldn’t stop blathering, and was pacing the office, planning what she had to do.

It’ll be for two weeks. So your job at the coffee shop…

Her heart thrummed. Damn. She stopped pacing and was about to speak, but Jacob kept going.
