    Hanich, a young man, is presented with a situation of being an apprentice to Mr. Scrimm, the proprietor of a kitchen which offers Comfort for People in Extraordinary Circumstances, which does its humane activities in a neighborhood known as the Academia. Along with his co-worker, Mira, Hanich is given opportunity to learn the trade of offering help to people who need it the most.

    In the course of his first day as an apprentice, young Hanich loses his lucky coin at the hands of a street urchin, serves dinner to the League of Red-eyed Gentlemen, and helps to apprehend the Flying Hood who had stolen Miss Sonya’s prized gilded teapots.

    A Walk in Academia

    Hanich had been brought to a forgotten corner of the city, the Academia, to a soup kitchen on an innocuous corner, to be an apprentice. So far as he could tell, the Kitchen was a meeting venue for all manner of persons who were in need of support in one way or another. They met, they often had a meal—or some sort of refreshment, and they talked. Talking, it seemed, was the order of the day.

    The second day, Friday, had been much like the first, most of the activity of the Kitchen centered on a meal to be served in the evening. The meal on his first day of work had been for a particular group. This time the meal was for anyone who had a need for food or for company.

    Hanich had learned on his first day how to prepare the dining area for a meal, and on the second day he managed most of it without being reminded. He made the large dining area clean and presentable, cleaning around the tables and chairs before he arranged them at neatly as he could. Then he helped the silent and foreboding cook, Ope, in his preparations for the meal.

    As the sun began to sit low in the sky, the doors were opened. In the course of the next half-hour twenty-eight people shuffled in. Once the guests began to arrive, Hanich was the
