Previously: A neighborhood named the Academia is an epicenter of unexplained occurrences. There is also the Kitchen where a young man named Hanich is an apprentice. His co-worker is a young woman named Mira, who wears a distinctive porcelain panel on her cheek. Recently the Kitchen started hosting a meeting of a group called The Inventors of Gadgets that Don't Work. Isabela is a woman who progresses through the ages of her life every day, waking up as an infant, and going to sleep at night as an old woman.

Day One

Mira was awake as the sun first shone on the lace of her curtains making patterns on the wall which moved slightly for an almost imperceptible breeze and the sun rising above the nearby buildings. She sat up and let the sun touch her face. It was a new day; another day filled with work and hope.

There were girls who lived as pampered idols for their rich fathers, and who slept well into the middle of the day. That was not who she was meant to be, and Mira could only breathe a prayer of thankfulness every time the thought crossed her mind. Such an existence could only be tedious.

As she sat up there was an added reflection from the panel of porcelain on her face. There were those who thought it an affectation, they were customarily positive in their comments. As a decoration it would be quite becoming.

The panel on her face had recently been joined by porcelain rings on her fingers and a panel on the back of her left hand. There was no explanation for it, and only a few things were known about it. It was a progressive condition, one which had already taken her sister.

It was a condition which no one had ever had before.

She dressed quickly, having known what she would be wearing the night before.
