Along with his co-worker, Mira, Hanich is given opportunity to learn the trade of giving help to the people who need it the most, and learning, in the course of it all, that some circumstances are more extraordinary than others.

Previously: In the place called the Kitchen, in the Academia neighborhood, there is hardly a time when all is normal. But there are occasional stretches of time when it is the same flavor of exceptional for an extended time. In the weeks after the appearance and disappearance of Dr. Gates, Hanich, the apprentice to Mr. Scrimm, had been learning how to trust his ability to notice the details which other people miss.

A Preview of Summer

Rainy fall had changed to cold, still winter for a time, but in one unusual week the weather turned to the warmer side. If one were dropped into the midst of the Academia during this week, one might postulate that it was mid spring or early summer and the trees just hadn’t noticed yet.

In the Kitchen Hanich, the young apprentice worked in the capacity of one who hosts events and meals to benefit the people of the neighborhood. Mr. Scrimm's stated desire was that the Kitchen would be ready when winter revealed its true strength. There would be those who needed far more comfort and aid in the cooler months, and there was no excuse for being unready.

The fair weather was not an aid to Hanich, the fourteen year old apprentice at the Kitchen, it caused him to be eager to be outside and to do the kind of work which one does outside. He had been kept from honest work for too much of his life. His mother thought him too frail and sickly for such pursuits.

The work of the Kitchen, however, was mostly inside. Hanich did well to find time to spend an hour or two cleaning the sidewalks or the outside windows before he was needed within.

Mr. Scrimm, Mira said as they gathered to plan what was required for the evening meal in the large dining room. Since the weather has been so fair, I would like to take a walk in the Academia after we have finished with dinner.

Mira was
