Brushing your Pomeranian
Pictured above: Pomeranian enjoying a grooming season.
The coat of a Pomeranian dog is a double coat. He has a dense undercoat that is woolly. The soft, fluffy undercoat holds the outer layer away from the body. Then there’s the outer coat which is coarse and long and covers the whole body. It’s simple to brush the outer coat so your dog looks great. However, you must also brush the undercoat to prevent it from becoming extremely matted. It’s the undercoat that demands most of your attention for this reason.
Train your Pomeranian to lay quietly on each side as well as on its back for brushing. If your Pomeranian is uncomfortable in these positions, a simple alternative is to brush the Pomeranian on your lap.
The Dochlaggie babies are taught from a very early age to accept and enjoy grooming as part of their daily routine. I start at 3 weeks gently caressing the puppy and brushing the hair forward with my hand.
At 4 to 5 weeks a small, soft bristle brush is then used to gently brush puppy’s hair forward.
Teach your Pomeranian puppy that grooming is a fun and enjoyable time. The optimum time to begin grooming a young Pomeranian is following exercising and puppy’s evening meal. In other words close to puppy’s bedtime.
When you first begin training your puppy to be groomed, start by grooming a small part of his body. For example, do his back in the morning, legs after lunch, his tummy after your dinner and, finally, his neck at night. After each session, give him a treat so he’ll respond well to future grooming sessions and you’ll gradually be able to make them last longer. Try different positions. Get him sitting sometimes and standing at other times. Then he’ll be comfortable, regardless of what position you use when grooming him.
How often should you brush?
Ideally you would brush your Pom each day, either as a form of relaxation or while watching TV. However, most people’s lives aren’t always ideal. You can still get great results if you brush your dog every second day. Avoid delaying it longer than that because it can cause major problems.
Every dog sheds hair and it must go somewhere. It may become entangled in the outer coat and cause a clump of matted hair. It may get blown down your hall. It can get onto furniture, bedding, clothes or even you. When you brush your dog, this removes and catches a lot of the shed hair and this is one very important reason for you to groom every day if you can. That will help reduce the amount of unwanted hair that goes everywhere it shouldn’t.

I apply the following 3 steps prior to either bathing or trimming my Pomeranian. Applying these steps helps to ensure there are no snags, tangles and each and every hair is separated.
Step 1 is completely brushing my Pomeranian using the line brushing technique. Line Brushing is a basic technique used to brush most long coated dog breeds.
Using a pin brush commence from the shoulders and separate the coat in a line down to the skin from shoulder to base of the tail. Brushing one layer at a time, brush from the skin out. Pay attention to the areas that matt, tangle and knot easily; behind the ears, under the front legs and the groin area.

Step 2 is repeating the first step using a soft slicker brush.
Step 3 is repeating step 1 using a metal comb to completely comb through the Pomeranian’s coat. A Teflon coated metal comb will make this task
