Si bien LAC continúa avanzando hacia convertirse en una región de clase media, la tasa de reducción de la pobreza en 2013 fue más lenta que en años anteriores. El 40% más pobre de la población también ha experimentado un crecimiento de los ingresos más lento desde de la crisis financiera mundial de 2008-2009. Detrás del lento progreso de la prosperidad compartida y de la reducción de la pobreza se encuentra un estancado crecimiento económico en la región. Después de más de una década de una disminución constante, la desigualdad ha permanecido estática desde 2010 y continúa siendo alta. En vista del rol crucial que los ingresos laborales han tenido en la reducción de la pobreza y la desigualdad, este reporte analiza con mayor profundidad los mercados laborales de LAC y como estos pueden afectar las ganancias sociales de la región en el futuro. El informe muestra que el impulso de la región para incrementar su capital humano ha dado rendimientos; y son evidentes las mejoras en la composición de la fuerza laboral en toda la región. Sin embargo, el crecimiento substancial en los salarios no estuvo acompañado de cambios significativos en el mercado de trabajo: la agricultura y el empleo en el sector servicios con bajos salarios siguieron siendo las principales fuentes de ingresos para los pobres en LAC. En cambio, la mayor parte de las ganancias se vieron en los países que se beneficiaron del auge de materias primas en la última década. A medida que el auge de materias primas se desvanece y el crecimiento disminuye, hay riesgo de que los avances sociales logrados en la primera década del siglo se erosionen.
