The FRAN Blanket
What does it mean?
Let’s get the obvious question out of the way. Why FRAN? FRAN is the name of the finished project. FRAN is Fetching, Refined, Affable and Noteworthy. We will make female named patterns that go together to make FRAN. FRAN is perfect for beginners as you only need to know how to make double crochet, single crochet and chain. I will teach you all the special techniques you’ll need to know. All patterns begin just like a traditional granny square.
What is it?
I hope you’ll agree FRAN is a manly/unisex blanket or throw. There are no flowers, circles or curves at all in the patterns – just straight lines and texture. My blanket is about 68 inches x 68 inches (173 cm x 173 cm), but yours will perhaps be bigger or smaller depending on your chosen yarn and hook combo. While mine is square, you can add more squares to make it rectangular – although she’s really big and you may not want to. I have designed one large block which we will make 5 times and 4 small blocks which we’ll make 9 times each. Let me introduce you to all the gals.
First off, there is Pam. Pam is Polite, Amicable and Modest.
Then comes Ann. Ann is Affable, Nonchalant and Neat.
Next is Sue. Sue is Sardonic, Ultramodern and Ebullient.
Last of the small sisters is Fay. Fay is Formidable, Ambitious and Youthful.
The big girl is Kim. Kim is Kindly, Impressive and Mesmerising.
FRAN was designed with a single colour in mind and the patterns are written accordingly. However, of course you can rainbow the heck out of it if you wish.
The advantages of working in a single colour are :
- the details of the stitches and the patterns they create stand out
- no changing colours
- a lot less ends to deal with
- joining is super simple
- no thinking needed about colour placement
- you’ll end up with an elegant, classic, timeless blanket.

I used Bendigo Woollen Mills 10 ply cotton yarn in French Navy
colourway. You’ll need 3,240 metres (3,544 yards) of 10 ply cotton/worsted weight. If you’re using 8 ply or DK, I estimate you’ll
