I stand by patiently while Mike sets up my desk for me. Once he is finished I sit down and look at the computer screen. How do you want me to start?

He laughs at my eagerness. Your computer will be linked to mine, I just need to get someone from IT to set it all up properly. It’s been a while since I’ve had an assistant.

Oh, okay. So what do you want me to do for now?

For now you can do whatever you want. I’m going downstairs to get someone to set you up.

What if the phone rings? I won’t have any details yet. Do you have a paper diary?

I have a diary as a back-up yes, and you will have it on your desk later, but the phone won’t ring. My phone line has to be diverted to your phone, so you can answer all my calls and make my appointments for me.

What if the calls are private?

The only private call I could be getting at work would be my mother, and you can transfer her to me if I’m not busy, he says, ready to leave. You gonna be okay on your own for a bit?

Mhm, I should be. There’s nothing I can mess up if nothing works, I smile at him cheekily, get up from behind the desk, and give him a kiss.
