What Danny called my retreat — the house-sitting gig on the beach —was a perfect escape. No phone calls, no influence, just me, a trusty dog and the ocean.

Katalin is Hungarian: she’s Jewish and she came to the US during the Second World War. Her late husband was a fine arts dealer, so she’d married into wealth —she herself paints and her work is the real stuff, not a hobby or flea market-quality water colors. Katalin is an artist.

The house is exquisite; it manages to be beachy and homey and museum-like all at once. When she shows me my bedroom downstairs, I’m ready to climb into the bed before she even agrees to give me the job.

I love it here already, I say, reaching down to touch the handmade quilt on the bed.

Kim said you needed a vacation from your boyfriend, Katalin says.

She is a spritely old woman with blue eyes that twinkle. She’s pretty quick on her feet and has a healthy appetite, if lunch was any indication. She fed me pickled fish on rye toast with a stone-ground spicy mustard. There was a cherry tart for dessert with whipped cream. I feel better than I’ve felt all year. I don’t even want to go back to the city to get my stuff.

Yeah. I just quit my job because he was my boss.

Then it must really be over, she says with a question in her voice. Kim says he’s a powerful man. Don’t let that prevent you from doing what’s best for yourself.

He’s not going to change. I guess that’s the lesson I had to learn. But your generosity is providing me with the perfect escape, I say and sit on the bed. I scratch Tobey’s head because he’s been at my heel ever since I stepped foot in the place.

    Are you a dog person?

I have two cats, but they’re on sabbatical at my neighbor Wade’s place until you come back. I love all animals though, and Tobey seems like a wonderful companion.

This time will be good for you, good for me too. I haven’t been back to Hungary in almost thirty years. It feels like my last chance to get to see my cousins.

We’re a match made in heaven then. It will be good for both of us.

So I’ll see you next Wednesday and then you’ll drive me to the airport?

I wouldn’t miss it for the world. I can’t wait to get started.

The glass ceiling fantasy had to take place over the course of a few days. It involved pretending we didn’t know one another and some pretty risqué behavior at work on my end.

I told myself that I shouldn’t be so timid. We already had sex all the time at the office and it felt like everyone was in on it. If I couldn’t fulfill his fantasies, what kind of girlfriend did that make me? I wanted to be that girl. I wanted to be adventurous.

The clothing will come by courier, so you won’t know what you’re going to wear until that morning. I’ve assigned random days so it will feel more like a coincidence. That day, I will walk through the lower atrium and look for you. You must be discreet in order for this to work.

I buzzed the deliveryman in at six in the morning, already shaking with nerves, but the task wasn’t even that daunting. I tipped him a crisp twenty for coming so early. Danny left the money in an envelope because he seemed to want to be in control of every last aspect of his fantasy.

The giant silk ribbon around the rectangular garment box slipped right off; inside was a dress. I shook it out and stood to get a good look at it. A swing dress and, although beautiful, unlike anything I’d ever worn before. It’s floral, sort of ritzy-vacation-y for the South of France type of crowd.

I stood in front of my full-length mirror naked and pulled the dress over my head; the fabric rustled as the material swept down my body. It fell straight from the shoulder, no gathering at the cleavage or the waist, but I could pull it off thanks to my generous bust.

No underwear, no bra, not even on the bus there. I’d sweat with nerves and embarrassment. I may have been Danny’s girlfriend, but I was also a Montclair employee —I still had to face all of my co-workers.

Nice dress, Aim! Kim said casually as I walked into the office.

Thanks! Did Akhil send those mergers down?

Yeah, they’re all filed in acquisitions. But if you want to try to get balances again, go ahead. Carl and I couldn’t make heads or tails of them. We even stayed late last night running them through from the beginning.

I’ll give them a go. Are they unlocked or under general passcode?

Everything is unlocked. You want to get lunch later?

Um, I can’t —I have plans with Danny.

Suit yourself. I promised Carl I’d take him out for Korean BBQ.

The long morning was buried in files. I dreaded watching the clock creep— so worried about running into someone I knew. Yet, there were dirty thoughts that endlessly played through my mind. It was hard not to feel extremely sensual when you were naked at work, minus a piece of loose swinging fabric that felt about as garment-like as a bed sheet wrapped hastily around my body.

At five to noon I took a deep breath and forced my legs to stand. Performance anxiety. All I had to do is walk across the floor, in four-inch heels that were delivered along with the dress. The shoes were dainty, very feminine and difficult to walk in. I shot a nervous smile at my co-workers and walked to the elevator; the fabric billowed out around me, falling easily away from my body.  I took the elevator to the first floor and stepped a sinfully expensive high heel out onto the pure glass. Shielding my eyes from the plaque about undergarment rules, I headed in the direction of the waterfall in the back.

I knew the instructions were to wait at the start of the catwalk, but I needed to work up some nerve and the tropical garden against the back wall felt like a safe oasis in this modern, transparent world. It was peaceful up there, with the sound of the water trickling and the musky scent of the tropical plants growing in rich dirt. My nipples hardened in excitement. I turned and forced myself to face toward the entryway. Taking the tiniest, baby steps, I moved forward toward the catwalk. It would take me an hour to walk it with how much I was squeezing my legs.

Wide steps, Sunshine. I want to see your pussy move. Spread your legs when you stop. I want to be able to see everything up under that dress.

Danny’s instructions echoed in my head. Quite a lot of rules for a perverted fantasy. I looked down and my head swam with the height, so I looked back up and try to concentrate on a window in an adjacent building to ease the dizziness. My head swam again when I saw a group from accounting make their way out of the elevator. They were talking and laughing, taking their sweet time to cross the lobby. All it would take was for one of them to look up—then everyone’s gaze would follow and I would have to sprint for the elevator, but not before giving the whole floor a glimpse at my nudity.

    I took
