About this ebook

Miranda Zane is thrilled to be at the commune, but she’s not thrilled about having to pick one of the lumberjacks for her year-long sex buddy. All she can think of is the two doctors in charge of the study and the way her body felt when she first locked eyes with them.

~~~~~ Excerpt ~~~~~
“Are you all right?”
Miranda suddenly realized that she’d been staring at the man, open- mouthed.
The doctor stood in front of her, and from what she could gather, he’d just asked her a question. But, she couldn’t recall any words sinking in to her head.
Heat rose in her face. All she’d ever wanted to do was make a good impression and now he was probably thinking she had a deficit of brain cells.
Miranda shook herself internally and summoned her top student skills. She took a deep breath, straightened her back and smiled brightly.
“Yes, doctor, how may I help you?” she said in an even, calm voice as if he’d just walked up to her and hadn’t already said something – whatever it was. It was a knee-jerk reaction, her nurse’s training kicking in. Respect the doctor. Feed their enormous egos. Always, always stand by to assist.
His eyes twinkled, and a smile tugged at his lips.
“So I take it, you are okay? Miranda Zane of 5215 Brookhurst Lane?”
It wasn’t a question. He knew. She wasn’t sure if that should please her or piss her off. So clinical of him to remember her address as well as her name. It meant nothing. Nothing at all. He probably just had a photographic memory, as many doctors did. It didn’t mean anything else.
“Why don’t you come back with me in the Jeep?”
“All right,” she said, or tried to say—but her tongue seemed too thick in her mouth, and the words came out more like, “Al vi ht.”
Miranda suddenly didn’t feel so good. The world seemed to swim around her. She felt dizzy and knew in an instant that she was suffering from dehydration, and possibly malnutrition from lack of food, or maybe it was the altitude.
The passenger van sped away, and she reached out for something to hold onto.
“Miranda, are you all right?” the doctor asked, taking her arm.
“What’s the altitude here?” she slurred.
The next thing she remembered was how dark brown the rich loamy soil looked as she fell towards it at a sickening pace. Something caught her before she could hit it, and then she passed out.
Her next memory was of waking up to the feel of bouncing over a bumpy road. Was she back on the bus? No, this was much worse than the bus. This vehicle had no shock absorbers, and her hair was flying into her face. She tried to reach for some hair that was sticking to her lips, but there was something holding her arms in place.
She opened her eyes a crack and knew at once that she was in the Jeep. Something around her waist moved, and she let out a yelp of surprise. She was sitting on someone’s lap, and that person had his arms wrapped around her.
Her eyes bulged as she made out the driver of the jeep. It wasn’t the sexy doctor driving the jeep, this time, it was her bus driver Mitchell, which meant she was sitting on the handsome doctor’s lap.
“Let me go,” she said.
“Just relax, we’re almost there.”
    Dr. Andrei Fedorov cursed loudly in Russian after disconnecting the secure call from the SSA operative in Gdańsk. He couldn’t fucking believe what he’d just heard. Both facilities jacked. Guards killed. Only the kilos of XMZ60 taken?
    Another burst of Russian curses left his mouth as he swiped his arm across his desk, upending a pencil cup and scattering the stack of patient files onto the floor.
    Andrei ignored the mess, feeling his bear rippling beneath the surface. The shifters guarding both facilities had been killed, their throats ripped out. Perps had to have been shifter and not human. But who? Andrei wanted to attack something, get revenge, but the culprits, whoever they were, were on the other side of the ocean.
    He got up and started to pick up the mess, starting with the bits of broken crockery from the shattered pencil cup. He realized that the fact that the attack came from shifters was a good thing. At least it wasn’t DTS. If Death to Shifters got wind of the miracle drug that could stop the imminent destruction of what this shadowy human organization referred to as the ungodly beings, they’d stop at nothing to destroy said miracle drug—and anyone associated with it.
    As an apex predator, Andrei feared very few things in his life, but the well-funded secretive organization of DTS was bent on the genocide of all shifters. Those people scared the shit out of him.
    With renewed purpose, Andrei started to put together the patient files. Any papers not secured inside the folders had managed to fall from the files. He began matching medical-information sheets, personal data, and photographs with the appropriate files as he wondered just who could have done it.
    Maybe it was an inside job, someone in the SSA. It was hard to believe, but it wouldn’t be the first time that someone sworn to uphold a certain set of rules went against them for their benefit. Or maybe someone not vetted or sworn into the SSA got wind of the news. Maybe a cleaning woman or a delivery guy found out that one of the shifter females had experienced a period after being treated at Dr. Fedorov’s clinic.
    Wouldn’t that be big news?
    Hell, yes!
    But if that were all it was, how would they even know about XMZ60? The patients were not given any details about the name of the drug. Yet, the thieves knew what to take.
    It had to have been an inside job—one of his clinicians, a nurse perhaps. No, that didn’t make sense. The clinicians and the nurses had no idea where the SSA insisted they store the supplies of XMZ60. The SSA had quietly shut down his clinic and given his staff sizeable severance packages and reminded them all about their non-disclosure agreements. Breaking the rules wouldn’t result in some lawsuit; the punishment would be far more swift and deadly—they all knew that.
    But perhaps someone higher up at the SSA had succumbed to greed or self-preservation for their species. Maybe they thought that if any shifters were to survive, it would be their animal and their clan first.
    But what if was more insidious than that? What if it was pure greed? The Russian mob immediately sprang to Andrei’s mind. What wouldn’t they do to possess this miracle cure? It was more valuable than gold, so they’d have every Alpha male on the planet driving up the price as they attempted to get their hands on the so-called last hope for procreation. In the hands of a few, they’d extract any price. The SSA would not stoop to such practices, or so Andrei sincerely hoped. Their mission was to find a cure, then make sure it was equally distributed across all lines of shifters—regardless of wealth or strength—ensuring the survival of all species, not just the rich and powerful ones.
    Andrei shook his head. He was getting ahead of himself. XMZ60 showed promise, but it hadn’t produced a shifter life.
    After moving all the pencils into a drawer, Andrei returned to the task of putting his files back together. Given the new looming threat, he felt guilt at the idea that the humans could be in danger.
    Perhaps bringing human females to the commune was a mistake.
    No, not a mistake. It was a necessary part of the plan.
    But what if they got wind of who and what they were? What if one of them had ties to the DTS?
    That thought brought Andrei up short, and reminded him that he’d been remiss when he chose not to bother with thorough background checks on the incoming research subjects. He’d been too busy trying to select the right eight male shifters, men with building and logging skills, who were already loyal members of the SSA.
    The head of the SSA wanted him to accept wolf and tiger shifters, but Carter had refused, claiming that the likelihood of interspecies violence was too high. He promised to begin distributing the XMZ60 to the SSA to start up the other shifter species in selective fashion as soon as a pregnancy was confirmed. But in the meantime, it was too risky to have anything other than bear shifters at the commune.
    Finally, the SSA higher-ups reluctantly agreed on the bear-only first round of experimentation, but there had been one insistent holdout. Peter von Satchel, a wolf shifter of royal heritage and the vice counsel for the SSA, was overruled, and the measure passed. Andrei thought about the man and decided that he wouldn’t put it past him as being behind the break-ins.
    Almost done straightening out the mess of files, he turned over the last piece of paper. It was a 5x8" photograph, the kind they’d made for each of the study participants. It had been on the floor face down, and the moment he flipped it over and saw who it was, Andrei Fedorov felt a pull in his chest. It was her, Miranda Zane, the human he couldn’t get out of his mind.
    He stared at the picture, and all thoughts of the thefts and the dead shifters and what it might mean left his mind. In just a few hours she’d be there, breathing the same air he breathed. She would be asked to choose one of the men as her sexual partner for the duration of her stay at the camp. Thinking of Miranda going upstairs to one of the bedrooms above the main dining hall with some other man twisted like a knife in his stomach. He slammed her picture into the file and shut it closed as he endeavored to push down his bear. He should never have accepted her, not since the moment he felt the strong pull towards her.
    You’ve got an entire species to save, Andrei, he told himself.
    Vowing to avoid thinking about the dark-eyed beauty with the raven black hair anymore, Andrei returned the files back to his desk. Everything looked neat, organized, and normal again. He felt calm, his equanimity restored. He would finally have that chat with Carter, the one he’d been putting off. He would tell Carter everything, no more secrets. If the Kodiak Commune could be in danger, it wouldn’t be right to leave him in the dark. Andrei trusted Carter like a brother, and he was tired of lying to him about the true source of funds for their project. He’d tell him everything.
    No, not everything. Not how he felt about the one patient. He’d just have to get over that, and act as if it was never a thing. Carter didn’t need to know that.
    Andrei dialed Carter’s cell phone again, but when he got the voicemail for the second time, he decided that Carter had forgotten his phone again. He pulled his jacket from the hanger behind his door and stepped out of his office, locking the door behind him. He walked down the flight of stairs that let out into a hall near the reception area, made sure all the lights were off, exited the building, and as usual locked the door behind him.
    He moved away from the main part of the commune and headed to the trail that led up to Carter’s lab. Just the thought of finally having the chance to unburden himself gave Andrei both a jolt of good spirits, as well as a knot of apprehension. Carter might not be pleased to learn he’d been played, that Carmina was an SSA agent, and that Raymond and the other security staff were all there to make sure the
