    About Where Was God?:

Theologically challenging, and deeply personally, in Where Was God? Stephen re-examines the ever important question of God and human suffering. Written as a conversation between four friends, this book is at once theologically significant and practically profound. It is approachable, simple, and powerful.

Hear what others are saying about Where Was God?:

A masterpiece on the question of human suffering...definitely a must.

So many passages spoke to me...

This is a thoughtful, conversational, delightful little book on a very relevant topic.

I’ve traveled a lot in my life, especially recently since my wife’s been in school. We’ve lived half in the U.S. and half in Europe these last three years. But it’s challenging to live like this, because neither place feels like home anymore. I’m always feeling like an outsider, at least partially, because everything changes so fast when we’re gone. Every time we return to either place it’s always familiar yet different enough to feel brand new. But never does it feel like coming home, in the traditional sense of the word.

But home isn’t a location, I’ve come to learn. Humans are nomadic by nature, we’ve always been on the move. Yet to be human is to be in relationship. What are we but the company we keep? We have our individuality, for sure, but would it last without community? Isolation can drive a person insane. Only in community are we free to be individuals; only in relationship are we free to be ourselves.

This is home: community. Home isn’t a house you live in, it’s the people you share life with. For me that’s most of all my wife, but it’s also my parents and my friends from around the globe. My wife is always with me, and thanks to the internet I am only a click away from anyone in the world I want to see. So home for me now is more about these people than it is about what country I happen to be in this month. And it’s these people who I love and trust that make up who I am and make up what I call home.

And that’s the other thing about home. As a community, home means more than just people, because it’s more about being with the people who love you, the people you belong to. It’s an often unspoken element to home, but perhaps it’s the most essential. Home is when we share life with people we love, who love us, people we’d die for,
