About this ebook

The book Straight to Hell takes a look inside the world of investing and stock trading. This book is from the perspective of John LeFevre. John tells the story starting from the time he attended boarding school up until the peak of his career. He gives an uncensored look into his life and the life of many of his colleagues. This is a world filled with lies and deception where the rules do not apply.
Many people have recently become familiar with the dark side of the stock market from watching the popular film The Wolf of Wall Street. John gives a look into his life and he gives a contrast to the main characters from other famous financial industry villain stories. John started his investing career in New York before moving to London and then spent the majority of his time working out of Hong Kong.

    Analysis

    Chapter 1

The first chapter starts out with the author reflecting on a time when he was having drinks at the World Trade Center with some of his colleagues. They were waiting for a financial training course to begin. At the time, he was in the process of applying for jobs with all the top financial companies around New York City. He makes it a point to convey that he wanted a position in fixed income and this industry is very competitive.

The author and his colleagues are required to take a series of entrance exams. The people who score in the bottom 10% of these exams are told that they will be let go. The author feels confident in his ability to pass these exams so this does not bother him. He notes that he along with many of the other students got by from copying each other’s work and they’re still able to easily pass the courses.

Some of his colleagues ended up getting terminated because they were caught copying homework. The author did not get caught, but this did not stop him from copying. He just became more careful about the way that he copied others work. The author did manage to graduate his course and after graduation he attended a speech given by some of the top heads of the company. He successfully became a member of the 2001 analyst class.
