The issue of life and death is covered in this book. The main character shows that a person will do whatever it takes to preserve life when they are faced with the possibility of death. Many political issues are also covered in this book. Nations like Israel and the Congo are both very volatile places and they reflect the struggle between life and death. Just like in this book, there are people in the world who want to see these nations eliminated and it is up to a select few to preserve the people of these countries and their way of life.

    Prologue

    Laura and Scott Harvath are on their way to the airport because Laura has to catch a flight to Alaska. Scott wants to get Laura out of Washington D.C. because the people of that city have been infected by a virus outbreak. The virus is just starting to spread and Scott feels that it is important to get away before the situation gets worse. Scott has told Laura that he is going to come and join her as soon as he can, but he is worried that he might not get the chance to make it. Scott has received word that he only has a couple days before he is needed by his country.

    Chapters 1 - 10

    Scott is shown a video that was filmed in the African country of Congo. This film shows people in biohazard suits going into a healthcare clinic before gunfire erupts. This healthcare clinic was set up by a humanitarian organization known as CARE international. CARE is the organization that is responsible for dispatching Scott and his team to the Congo in an attempt to figure out what events took place. There is very little information available regarding any knowledge available for Scott and his team. This lack of information is a red flag for Scott, but he also realizes that he is the only man for this job. After contacting Laura and telling her that he will not be able to meet as planned, he departs for the Congo.
