    Chapter One: Introduction

Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak was first published in 1957. The title of the novel is after the protagonist, Yuri Zhivago. He happens to be a physician and poet.

The story of the novel is set between the Russian Revolution and the Civil War. When the book was about to be published in Russia, the government in the USSAR did not allow it to be published because the book presents independent minded stance on the Russian Revolution.

Eventually, Giangiacomo Feltrinelli instigated the author to smuggle the manuscript to Milan in Italy where it got published in the year 1957.

The following year, the author was awarded the highest award, the Novel Prize for Literature. When the news reached the USSR, the government obviously felt quite embarrassed and enraged, but they did not react in any other way.

In 1965, David Lean adapted the novel into a movie. The story has been adapted twice for television serials. It was eventually shown on Russian TV as a miniseries in 2006.
