    MEET THE TIGER

Tigers are members of the cat family. They are the biggest cats still alive today.

Tigers come in many colors. A lot of tigers are orange with black stripes. There are also white tigers with white stripes, white tigers with black stripes, and black tigers with black stripes.

Some tigers have stripes that go all around their bodies. Other tigers only have stripes on their backs and the outside of their legs.

The stomach of most tigers is lighter in color than its back. Often orange tigers will have white stomachs. No one knows why.

The stripes help them to hide in the grass and forest. When a tiger is hunting it lays on its stomach. That way you can't see the white parts on its stomach or inside the legs.

Tigers have long tails. The tail can be as long as the rest of their body. When they run the tiger will hold his tail up. This helps him to keep his balance when he turns very quickly.

Their back legs are longer than their front legs. This helps them to jump higher.

They also have sharp claws on each foot. Just like a house cat, they can pull their claws back into their feet. That helps them to walk quietly. With their claws pulled in, they don’t click against the rocks they are walking on.

The bottom of their feet have thick pads that also help quiet the sound. A tiger can walk right beside you through the woods and you would never hear him. They can walk that quietly.

They may act mean but tigers are very shy. They will try to run away or hide instead of fight.

Tigers don't see very well in the daytime. At night they can see much better. They can see about six times better than we can at night. That is why they like to hunt at night and not in the daytime.

Tigers also have eyes that glow in the dark. If you shine a light into a tiger’s eyes their eyes will glow.

One thing tigers are good at is hearing. They use their ears a lot when they hunt. They can even turn their ears back and forth to help find out where a sound is coming from.

Tigers live in Asia. They live in a lot of different kinds of areas. Some like to live in the rainforest. Some live in places with snow. Some even live in swamps.

Tigers like to live around lots of trees. They also like areas with lots of bushes or tall grass. That gives them places to hide.

The tigers that live in Russia have lighter fur. Sometimes it is white. This
