Chapter 1: Discovering Your True Worth

For you did form my inward parts, you did knit me together in my mother’s words. —Psalm 19:13

Barbara Walters in an interview with Monica Lewinsky asked, Where was your self-worth? Ms. Lewinsky, who became famous in the late 90s for an affair with President Clinton, sadly replied, All my life, I’ve had a problem with low self-esteem. I don’t have the feeling of self-worth that women should have. I think that’s been the center of a lot of my mistakes.1

Ms. Lewinsky’s response reveals the difficulty of low self-worth many women face. Countless of us have shared her pattern of searching for our worth in the wrong place and finding answers that prove to be unsatisfactory. I believe our Father God that created us (humanity) with such compelling desires to be valued and esteemed has offered us the answers we so desperately search for. Through divine inspiration He has made the Bible our sourcebook of answers.

To accept ourselves as women of value, we need to know God’s answer to the four classic questions of life. We must know where we came from, who we are, why we are here and where we are going. Knowing God’s answers, we can accept ourselves and begin to live the life God wants us to live. Throughout this book we will follow a Biblical trail offering God’s path to destiny.

Perhaps you feel you can’t relate to an ex-battered wife but you need to stop looking at yourself as heavy and overweight. Or maybe you need an overhaul in attitude to stop viewing yourself as nobody with no anointing. There are some that need God to change the image of poverty inside you.

If you are one of those needing a change in how you view yourself, a commitment is needed from you. You will have to work with God toward renewal in attitude or spirit. You will have to tear down a system of wrong thought patterns and beliefs that have kept you captive. Whether the wrong thought patterns were self-inflicted or instilled by others, make a commitment to do what it takes to renew the spirit of your mind.

Whatever brands of poison our enemy (the devil) has used to distort your God given image; purpose to join me in walking the Biblical trail of WOW. Lay hold of the truths that will restore the Father’s image of YOU in your heart. Throughout this book we will follow the biblical trail of God’s answers to the classic questions of life one by one.

    A Portrait Of God’s Woman

    A WOMAN’S WORTH

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart. Jeremiah 1:5a

We will start by painting a beautiful portrait of God’s woman and her worth in God. First we will stretch and mount the canvas of our heart by establishing a simple principle. God loved and knew us before the womb.2 Based on that principle, I am convinced that each human spirit is handed down from above as a good and perfect gift.3 We serve a sovereign God that makes no mistakes. There are no mistake births. In one of my college classes, my classmates and I were required to write a paper about a current and controversial issue. Some chose the tobacco issue, the dying (helping patients to die graciously), welfare, racial issues and so on.

Somehow, there was only one issue that I could choose. I chose the pro-life/pro-choice issue. As I researched this subject the enemy’s plan became clear. He was forever getting people emotionally engaged in fighting about what I began calling subtopics. So much so the real issue was lost amid the tempers and indignation of opinions. I titled my paper Will the Real Issue Step Forward.

I began the paper with my position and explanation of what I felt the real issue is. Is a child just as human at embryo stage of development in the womb as he or she is at baby stage of development outside the womb, toddler, preteens, teenager and even adults? A young friend of mine came to me with just such a question when she was pressured by her parents to end her 3-week unexpected and outside-of-marriage pregnancy. How would you respond to this question?

    BEFORE THE WOMB

If you have children or have been around children for any length of time, I’m sure you have faced this question, Where do babies come from? Thinking about what my answer would be, I remembered a vision a friend shared with me, a few years ago, about her dream of having a child:

She said, "One morning, shortly after waking, I was in the Spirit and heard a voice behind me saying, ‘Look!’ I looked and saw something tiny; it was being handed down from heaven. From holy hand to holy hand, it was coming. I squinted my eyes, trying to get a clearer glimpse.

Suddenly, I saw it clearly; it was a baby with black, wavy hair, wrapped in a blue blanket. The voice again from behind me said, ‘This is your first blessing. Train him up in the way he should go for the time is short.’ Then a scripture confirming this vision came to my mind, ‘Every good and perfect gift is handed down from above from the Father of light in whom there is no shadow of turning.’"

She was single when God gave her the vision. Eighteen years into her marriage with no children, the vision has become a precious hope for her and her husband. At any rate, it offers us insight into where we come from. But don’t take just my word for it, read what the writer of Ephesians says,

Even as (in his love) he chose us—actually picked us out for Himself as His own—in Christ before the foundation of the world; that we should be holy (consecrated and set apart for Him) and blameless in His sight, even above reproach, before Him in love. For He foreordained us (destined us), planned in love for us to be adopted (revealed) as His own children through Jesus Christ, in accordance with the purpose of His will—because it pleased Him and was His kind intent. ─EPHESIANS 1:4,5

I want to set a premise that God had you in mind before you were born. Our family pastor, Mike Hayes says, Our parents did not make us they were just the vessels that God used to bring us into this world. Your Creator is God. Here’s a couple of other Scriptures that support this premise:

Yet You are He who took me out of the womb; You made me hope and trust when I was on my mother’s breasts. I was cast upon you from my very birth; from my mother’s womb you are my God. ─Psalm 22:09,10

Although, my father and my mother have forsaken me, yet the Lord will take me up (adopt me as his child). ─Psalm 27:10 AMP

Let’s agree with David, the psalmist when he said, From my mother’s womb you are my God. Begin to let Father God be God in your life. Many times those that have had many trials in life to survive they learn to do everything for themselves. We learn not to depend on anyone but ourselves. For a long season, I did not have to worry about betrayal because I trusted no one.

I have since learned God will share the throne of our heart with no one; not even you or me. If you are there, begin right now to surrender the throne of your heart to a holy God. The one who knew you and formed you in the womb, He is faithful and trustworthy.

God began working in my heart to help me realize that I was known, accepted, valued, chosen and belonged to Him. He liberated me from a desperate need to get these things from other people.

As my heart changed, I began to understand more and more why I continued to compromise in areas of my life to gain acceptance. A divine dissatisfaction grew within me until I could no longer accept the small payoff I gained each time I yielded to someone else’s plan instead of my convictions.

I began accepting what God has said about his creation and my inner picture began to change. He began painting a beautiful Word portrait of His woman inside me starting with her worth.

He stretched and mounted the canvas of my heart by settling a simple principle in my life. He loved and knew us before the womb.4 I realized once we receive God’s love and began to love and accept ourselves; it improves our relationship with Him and with others. We are free to love and be loved.

    GOD LOVED US FIRST

The first stroke of paint on this painting is God loved us first.5 Before we knew we needed a savior God loved us. Until we accept his love, the cycle is incomplete. We are able to love Him only because He first loved us.

A simple principle of life is: we cannot give what we do not have. Therefore, we are able to love Him only because He first loved us. Let us count the ways our God has loved us:

    •         We are known. Remember, I am setting a premise that God knew us before we are born.6 Again, my family’s pastor, Mike Hayes says, Our parents did not make us they were just the vessels that God used to bring us into this world. Your creator is God.

    •         We are accepted. God accepted us. He has loved and approved us. We are suitable and pleasant in His eyes.7 We are God’s Beloved, even the apple of His eye. Therefore, we are free to accept others.8

    •         We are valued. The value of anything is decided by how much someone pays for it. With this determination in mind, God determined
