Chapter 1

The domestic terminal at Pearson airport in Toronto was as busy as ever. Families meandered and business travellers walked briskly up and down the terminal in search of the airline counter of their choice. 

Erika walked purposefully toward the Air Canada counter and with a slight smile, bypassed the long line of passengers who slowly advanced toward the ticket agents. It was just one of the privileges of flying first class.

Good evening, Miss Walker, so nice to have you flying with us again this evening.

How are you, Sam? she replied. It looks like a full flight tonight, she observed with a nod of her head toward her fellow travellers. 

Your flight is booked solid, he confirmed. Even first class is booked up. It looks like Vancouver will be busy this weekend.

Erika gave the agent a warm smile as he returned the well-worn travel documents to her. My assistant said that the hotel was booked solid too. I was lucky to get the last suite.

You’re in seat 4A, Miss Walker. Your seat mate is another of our loyal Altitude members so you can enjoy your flight.

Thank you, Sam. I’ll see you again soon. 

With that, her bags were whisked off to travel a labyrinth of conveyor belts while she made her way through the security checkpoint for the brief wait in the comfortable first class area known as Maple Leaf Lounge. The private room was a serene escape from the noisy and often chaotic terminal and it afforded her one last chance to talk to her personal assistant before departing on the five hour, cross country flight. Inside the cozy, comfortable room, she grabbed a light snack of cheese and fruit along with a glass of wine and settled in next to the wall of windows that looked out over the darkening sky of the busy tarmac.
