    THE APPROACH

It had been a long eighteen hour direct flight from New York to Johannesburg on South African Airways flight ZA2165. I picked up a copy of The Times and read an article on a bomb that had gone off in Afghanistan in a crowded market place and was glad that the madness of young Moslem martyrs, exploding bombs and kidnappings as well as random killings of civilians, had not reached the shores of South Africa. Suddenly the noise pitch of the jet engines changed and I knew that we were on our final approach into Johannesburg International Airport, now recently named after that great South African visionary Oliver Tambo. South Africa – they call it a World in One Country due to the dramatic variety of landscapes that exist in this country right at the southern end of Africa.

From the isolated beaches along the rugged and wild coastline in the west from Cape Town to Namibia, to the sub tropical beaches that exist up the east coast as far as Mozambique as well as the soaring peaks of the mighty majestic Drakensberg Mountains that are snow covered in winter.

Here one can find modern first world cities like Durban with the largest harbour in Africa and that has a large surfing fraternity which term it Surf City and Johannesburg the vibrant commercial hub of the country as well as Cape Town a pulsing cosmopolitan city with the world famous Table Mountain overlooking the Mother City so called as it was the first town to be founded in South Africa by the early colonists.

My thoughts about South Africa were suddenly disturbed by the airhostess asking me if I would like a final drink, and as the seatbelt lights had not come on I decided to have a final bells on the rocks. She poured the drink and leaned over me to put it on the vanity tray in front of me and I got the distinct feeling that she intended to brush up close to me so that I just caught a glimpse of velvet flesh peeking out of her blouse that had one button undone.

I hope your drink is satisfactory Mr. Chisum she purred and as she pulled away I saw a small piece of paper that had been placed on the tray under the glass.

I discreetly picked it up and saw a cell phone number and the words Call me – Andrea, a mobile phone number had also been written on it.

I pondered on how she had been able to mention my name and re-alised that she probably was able to pick up my seat number and name from the flight manifest. I would take her up on her offer soon and perhaps an intimate dinner or two would lead to greater discoveries.

Frank Chann’s the name, the young man with a pony tail hairstyle, sitting next to me on the inside seat had introduced himself as such, soon after we had left New York. Oh like Jackie Chan the actor I replied.

Yes except with two nn’s at the end. He said that he was on a business trip to South Africa to secure large import contacts and had been in New York to visit various business associates.

He was a well-dressed individual and the Armani suit fitted him like a glove. The snake skin shoes completed the picture and I re-alised that he was what one would term walking money.

Jason Chisum I responded and we exchanged small talk and settled in for the long non-stop flight from John F Kennedy in New York to Johannesburg. He never asked about my profession and I never gave it.

It had been a long three weeks in the states, having been hired by a rich American businessman now living in South Africa, who suspected his wife was having an affair with an employee who was based in New York, and worked for a company that he owned and that the so called overseas shopping trips were a mere smoke screen to hide her liaisons with her lover.

His hunch about his wife had been right. After days of tailing the target and sitting in my hired car late into the night and renting a room across from the company apartment in the Upper East Side in Manhattan, I finally had all the graphic details shot with my long range lens, in my bag that was stowed away in the overhead luggage compartment.

The wife who I had not actually met, was a woman about ten years younger than her husband, blonde, shapely and was one of those types that knew how to flaunt it. Unfortunately for her she was a nothing before she met her husband and the final nail in the coffin would be me delivering the pictures to him of the intimate dinners and the many late night rendezvous’ with her lover.

She stood to lose everything. I stood to make twenty five thousand dollars plus expenses. Not bad for three weeks work. But I thought, the amount of work I was getting in the states might necessitate re-locating and operating out of New York instead Of Cape Town.

My thoughts were suddenly jarred by a slight shudder of the aircraft and the pinging sound of the seat belt alarm.

The pilot announced that we would be landing in twenty minutes time but that a rough landing was expected due to a late thunderstorm that was almost a daily occurrence on the South African Highveld. The storm lay just ahead between us and the airport and the captain advised us to ensure that all cabin luggage was safely stowed away and that our seat belts were fastened.

I was not the best of fliers but the last scotch that I had just had seemed to ease my nerves a bit and I decided to ignore the flashes of lightning that permeated through the window and to finish reading the in-flight magazine that I had started to read when we left New York.

I looked up as I smelt a faint whiff of recognizable perfume and it was Andrea our red head airhostess . Are you a bad flier Mr. Chisum? she asked. This girl must have a sixth sense I thought. If you are feeling a bit queasy I do have something in a medicine chest that I can fetch from the cabin food preparation area if you want she said.

No I’m fine thanks and any way we will be landing soon. Thanks for the trouble I responded. No trouble at all and she carried on moving gracefully down the aisle checking on the other passengers. As she sat down on one of the cabin crew’s seats I thought I detected a wink from her and a small smile from her mouth before she turned around to face the opposite direction.

I would definitely give her a call soon.

The plane shook violently but briefly and again it seemed as though the storm would overcome the fragility of the aircraft but the skilful pilot adjusted the thrust of the Rolls Royce engines that were powering the behemoth Boeing 747 towards our final destination. Just as my thoughts started to run away with me as to whether I would touch terra firma in one piece the lights of Johannesburg twinkled through the wisps of cloud and I could tell that it was raining hard due to the water sheering off the wing of the plane.

The rumble of thunder out did the engines of the plane and the lightning was amazing to watch from a different perspective as opposed to being on the ground. Our altitude dropped rapidly as the captain followed the IFR glide path and the surrounds of the airport came into view.

The plane was now almost at stalling speed as the airbrake spoilers were deployed and we landed like a frigate bird approaching a nest high on the cliffs on some remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean. Before I knew it we were hurtling down the runway, the captain applying reverse thrust and brakes saw us come to a standstill.

The aircraft taxied ever so slowly to our allocated parking and even before the plane came to its final resting place passengers were starting to gather their personal belongings in anticipation of disembarking. I remained in my seat even though the young Chinese man that I had been sitting next to was already half way down the aisle without even so much as a good bye.

I thought nothing of it and started gathering up my belongings and bag stowed in the upper baggage compartment.

I waited until the last passenger in business class had filed past me as I wanted a quick, quite word with Andrea - our red headed airhostess.

Did you have a pleasant flight Mr. Chisum? she enquired as I approached her. I could sense that she wanted more than a courteous Yes thank you from me and I quickly slipped another
