Be aware. They might be tasty, but they have a little kick.

Gemma was the one who found them.

The path through the woods only took thirty minutes, instead of the conventional road that winded through the hills and took twice as long. Edgar knew of the barn. A man by the name of Kipper owned it, though he hadn’t seen him himself, and the barn didn’t seem to be little more than a decaying relic. Inside was farm equipment, old and rust-covered. It all appeared untouched for the last few decades, left to rot in the changing seasons and ferocious weather. The wood had faded long ago, and the interior was a haven for cobwebs and mice. It was a familiar resting point.

Tucked almost inconspicuously behind the rear tire of an old tractor was a bag of colorful candy, each one a little larger than a bean. There must’ve been a hundred of them inside the yellow bag, or maybe even two hundred. Edgar and Gemma hadn’t seen it there before, but perhaps they hadn’t looked. It didn’t stand out; the bag itself was faded as if it had been sitting in the sun for months or even years. Over time, much of the words and designs on the package had blended together, becoming indecipherable.

One thing that was clear was the name on the bag: Snoogies.

    "Oh, gross," Gemma said.

Edgar turned and peered into the barn, his eyes adjusting to see in the shadows. What is?

A bag of old candy. It’s opened, too. You ever heard of Snoogies?

Snoogies? Edgar chuckled. The word itself was amusing to say. What are those?

    Here.

Gemma lifted the bag up and placed it on the tractor tire. The entire thing flattened and bulged at the middle as the candy inside shifted and spread out. The name on the package was printed in colorful, bold letters, surrounded by cartoon characters with bodies made from the bean-shaped candy pieces, all with cheerful expressions and massive eyes. Edgar looked inside. The candy had the consistency of gummy bears only without the shape. A fruity smell touched his nose.

Gemma gasped. Okay, you want to know how old this stuff is?

I’m not sure that I do.

She pointed at the bag. Well, a lot of it’s worn off, but I can make out the copyright date. It’s from twenty years ago.

    Yuck!

’These little atomic bombs of flavor will have you eating until there’s no more left,’ she read off the package. And then something I can’t make out.

    Let me see, Edgar said.

The back of the package was much like the front, with those same cartoon characters that each had the body of a piece of candy and huge eyes. Here, all the flavors were shown. The pink one was at the top of the list. Underneath it was a word—watermelon. The yellow one was supposedly banana-flavored, and the black one liquorice. He also saw a blue one and a green one, but the packaging was too faded to make out the flavors. Below that were more that couldn’t be made out at all.

You know, they don’t look like they’ve gone bad, Gemma said, reaching into the bag and pulling out a handful. The candy slipped between her fingers and fell back inside. I’ve smelled rotten food before. These don’t smell like that.

You seriously thinking about eating one? Edgar nearly retched at the thought. That’s disgusting! You don’t know where that bag’s been.

Maybe not, but the candy looks fine.

Edgar crossed his arms. I bet there’s a reason it’s not sold anymore. Just saying. If you start puking your guts up, don’t say I didn’t tell you not to eat them.

    I’ll keep that in mind.

Gemma reached into the bag and pulled out one of the candies—a yellow piece. Edgar remembered the diagram on the back of the package, and that yellow was supposed to be banana-flavored. Maybe several years ago, he thought to himself. Now there was no telling what it tasted like. Regardless, Gemma inspected the candy for a few seconds more before popping it into her mouth. She chewed and swallowed it.

    "Whoa."

What? What do you mean by that?

She closed her eyes. "There was a lot of flavor crammed into it. Like, it was really strong. I wasn’t expecting that."

    "And it still tasted
