About this ebook

THIS BOOK IS FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO UNDERSTAND THE TIMES IN WHICH WE ARE LIVING AND TO PREPARE FOR DIFFICULT DAYS AHEAD.

The Credit Crunch has produced a world in turmoil, with governments doing everything possible to prevent a financial crisis turning into an economic crash on the lines of the 1930s Depression. Will this global rescue package succeed and prevent an economic collapse in Britain?

The authors believe God has already spoken into this financial shaking. It was declared prophetically in 1997 when this book was first published. The people of Great Britain are being warned about sin that has entered every area of society, not just greed within the financial markets.

Yet with God, there is still hope for those who are willing to accept the warning.

As individuals and as a Nation, we must heed the alarm being sounded all over Britain, turn to the Living God and put our trust in Him.

Earthquake in the City - Paul Slennett

    EARTHQUAKE IN THE CITY

‘My children, the alarm bells are sounding all over Europe, for judgement is being spoken out over the nations. Over your nation, Great Britain, a mighty earthquake is about to occur, an earthquake that will swallow up the whole City. Whole companies and city institutions will collapse in this earthquake, some never to rise again.

‘My judgement that has been withheld for so long must now be unleashed on your nation in order that my church repent and lead this nation in repentance, for I am a righteous and holy God, just in all my ways, a God who longs to show mercy, but one who will no longer tolerate the unrighteousness of my dear church. It is out of love that I visit this nation with judgement – you must know that this must always be the case. My children, repent now before it is too late, for already the day of my return draws near and you must not be found wanting, like the virgins who did not fill their lamps with oil; but awake, my children, and be my watchmen, and speak with a prophetic voice of the judgement that is about to come upon the nations.

‘If you repent and turn from your wicked ways, I will visit your nation, Great Britain, once again, not with judgement, but with revival power, and I will protect you from all the strategy of the enemy.

‘In regard to Europe, come out of her, my dear children, for she will align herself with the Beast and the False Prophet who will arise and appear for just a short while. My children, take heart, for I am with you always. Do not give up, but pray without ceasing and see the salvation of your God.’

    Preface to the New Edition

Over the eleven years since Earthquake in the City was first published, Britain has become a very unsettled place in which to live. A generation ago we were much more under God’s protection. Now, in one area after another, the protective walls are down. This is evident in the discomfort and disorder all around. The heart of God reaches out to a disobedient people, but there comes a time for reaping what we have sown through following paths that have turned away from Him.

Britain is full of false religion, blasphemy, selfishness, family breakdown and bloodshed, going from bad to worse. Bad goes to worse when we are out of God’s protection.

Britain still has biblical principles in its unwritten constitution, but now, in every area of national life, we have betrayed the heritage that was passed on to us from long ago. Therefore, we should not be surprised if God gives us strong warnings before He lets us go our own way even more fully.

As we were preparing to republish this book, a number of concerns were coming to the fore:

In Lisbon, in December 2007, Prime Minister Brown signed up to an EU Treaty that many say is almost identical to the constitution rejected two years earlier. The Treaty will create a powerful new presidency, whether we like it or not, and Britain will no longer be free to serve the One True God. Closer union with Europe will end in disaster for this country.

A significant financial crisis started with the collapse of the sub prime lending in the USA.

Since then seismic events hit the banking sector across the world. Banks were toppled, stock markets crashed, panic was everywhere and governments were perplexed. The Head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned that the world’s financial system was teetering on the ‘brink of systemic meltdown.’

The USA and Europe followed Britain’s lead to recapitalize their banks by pumping public money into their distressed banks in return for shares. Will this global rescue package succeed? Perhaps for a time, but then there are other areas of the financial world which are also vulnerable.

As reported in The Times of 15th October 2008, John McFall, the Treasury Select Committee Chairman, whilst welcoming the rescue package, pointed to the huge exposure of the banks to Credit Default Swaps (in effect insurance policies promising to protect bondholders against default). Describing it as a big concern, he said: ‘We are seeing a process of de-leveraging. We don’t know what problems that might throw up.’

These are the developments in the financial world, but what about the sins of the nation?

Since 1967 there have been almost 7 million abortions, now 200,000 a year, with one in four pregnancies ending in abortion. In Great Britain, unborn children can be aborted up until the 24th week of pregnancy. This is in effect abortion on demand – all you need is to find two doctors somewhere who will sign a piece of paper. In a book published in 1991, David Gardner writes that this blood-guiltiness brings judgement:

And where that blood has not been requited ‘at the hand of him that shed it’, in terms of his forfeiting his life for the life that he has taken, then God will require that blood at the hand of his nation, of his country. That is what the Bible teaches. So there is no question but that God is going to require the blood of those millions of lives that have been taken by legalised abortion, at the hand of this nation in terms of some terrible form of judgment. (Sound the Trumpet Among the Nations, 1991)

Anyone who reads the newspapers and walks in the streets of our towns and cities can add detail to these observations. Our prisons are overflowing, resulting in the early release of prisoners. Our hospitals, despite record spending, are suffering from an appalling lack of cleanliness and this has allowed an epidemic of the MRSA ‘superbugs’. Our children – the next generation of adults – are becoming more lawless and more without direction day by day, and all the investments in our schools have not overcome this. These are the signs of a decaying society that has decided to betray its trust in the One True God, and now the consequences will follow.

God is sounding the alarm concerning the judgement that is about to come upon the nations. He is warning about sin that has entered every area of society, not just greed within the financial markets.

On 27th February 2008, the biggest earthquake in the UK for nearly 25 years shook homes across large parts of England and Wales. This earthquake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was five miles east of Market Rasen, Lincolnshire. People in London, Yorkshire, Cumbria, the Midlands, Norfolk, Kent, East Sussex and also parts of Wales felt the tremor just before 0100 GMT. The most distant reports of the earthquake came from Aberdeen, Truro and Ireland. In the first edition of this book published in 1997, we interpreted the prophecy on which the book is based as being fulfilled through a financial earthquake that would, in our opinion, be accompanied by the sign of a physical earthquake. Whilst the recent earthquake could prove to be the anticipated physical earthquake, we think it is more likely to be a warning of something far more significant to come.

In trying to understand prophetic fulfilment in our day, we can look at our history for examples that can help us. One such example is the Great Fire of London. In 1666 there was a strong witness that this was the hand of God in judgement. Useful analysis of this can be found in a book by Adrian Tinniswood entitled By Permission of Heaven: The Story of the Great Fire of London, in which a vision that the great fire would occur is reported:

Walter Gostelo described how he had seen himself to the north of the capital, watching the population happily going about their business, when all of a sudden the sky darkened; and looking up he saw hordes of devils flying in from the east. There was a stench of fire and brimstone, and the air grew unbearably hot; and through the darkness an invisible army marched on London carrying black and white ensigns. (p.20)

After the fire broke out, it was followed immediately by gatherings in churches where people meditated on what they understood God had allowed them to suffer in order that they might turn from their sins.

In his book America’s Last Call David Wilkerson notes a speech made by King Charles II at that time. Here is a quotation from the book:

After the burning of London, the knight Sir Edward Turner gave a speech to the King at the convening of Parliament. He said: ‘We must forever with humility acknowledge the justice of God in punishing this whole nation by the late dreadful conflagration of London. We know they were not the greatest sinners on whom the tower of Siloam fell and doubtless all their sins did contribute to the filling up of that measure, which being full, drew down the wrath of God upon that city.’

The King responded to Turner’s speech with a repentant attitude: ‘His majesty therefore, out of a deep and pious sense of what himself and all his people now suffer, and with a religious care to prevent what may yet be feared, unless it shall please Almighty God to turn away His anger from us, doth hereby publish and declare his royal will and pleasure, that Wednesday, being the tenth of October next ensuing, shall be set apart, and kept, and observed by all his majesty’s subjects of England and Wales . . . as a day of solemn fasting and humiliation, to implore the mercies of God, that it would please Him to pardon the crying sins of this nation, those especially which have drawn down this last and heavy judgment upon us, and to remove from us all His other judgments which our sins have deserved, and which we now either feel or fear . . . Not only the blessed Scriptures, but also King and Parliament, do roundly conclude that it was for our sins, our manifold iniquities, our crying sins, that God has sent this heavy judgment upon us.’

We have moved forward more than 300 years since the Great Fire of London. Now we approach the end of the age when our lessons must be learned even more seriously. Will we listen to the heartbeat of God through the woes of our day, even a great woe in the form of an earthquake that devastates the City? Will we be as conscious of the Hand of God on our nation as were the people of Britain in other times in our history? Will our Queen and Prime Minister call the nation to prayerful repentance and will we consider these things and turn to God as the prophesied woe begins to be fulfilled?

As you read this book, may God inspire you to seek Him for yourself. Though there will be difficult days ahead, those who seek Him with all their heart will discover that He will transform their lives for the good. That is His intent for us all.

Note: Apart from this Preface and a new cover, this book is published exactly as it was eleven years ago. We have not changed the prophecy nor its interpretation to bring new thinking, but feel now is the time to send it out once more.
