I have every respect for Barbara Moses’ right to defend the state of Israel (Letters, December 9). Together with many other Jews in Israel and the diaspora, my wife, Professor Barbara Einhorn, and I are campaigners for justice for Israel’s neighbours, the Palestinians. Far from being anti-Jewish, our marriage was blessed in Hebrew by Rabbi Dr Albert Friedlander, from London's Liberal Jewish College.
Moses’ claim that, as an Anglican priest, I cannot be Jewish is very strange, given that Rabbi Jesus of Nazareth and his followers were all faithful Jews who interpreted the Jewish Bible, which is also the Christian Old Testament, in accord with the Jewish prophetic tradition.
The extremists on both sides of this recent conflict lay claim to the whole of Palestine. Therein lies the nub of the tragedy. Only the acceptance of a diplomatic compromise as proposed by the United Nations could begin to bring peace. Most of the Arab nations have, however reluctantly, already agreed to that.
