About this ebook
Why are some people more effective leaders? What makes them more engaging, more influential, and more successful than their peers?
In "Cape, Spandex, Briefcase," leadership expert David Kahn tells the story of a motivated young man who yearns to be successful in his new leadership role. He holds the manager title, but is struggling to become an actual leader. After an especially horrific experience, he is sent to a leadership coach...but why is this “expert” working in a comic book shop?
With Superman, Spider-Man and their costumed companions serving as paradigms of what it means to be a leader, this book introduces the “Five Superpowers of Leaders” and presents us with practical tools and skills necessary to motivate teams and earn respect.

This is a big day for you…gonna go out in the world and make a difference. Whatever you do, remember that. You’re going to make a difference. A lot of times it won’t be huge, it won’t be visible, even. But it will matter, just the same. Don’t do it for praise or money, that’s what I want to tell you. Do it because it needs to be done. Do it to make your world better…just a little at a time.

The Hero
At the public relations firm POW! PR, Inc. Ben was renowned as an up-and-coming star. Once hired, Ben gained a reputation for his work ethic and passion. Ben was on the fast track, advancing to an account executive position and rising through the ranks on his way towards his ultimate goal of making partner.
Within a few short years, Ben was promoted to executive director, the youngest in POW! PR’s history. His dreams were coming true… or so he thought. This was his first time managing his own department, and it was not nearly as fulfilling as he had expected.
The big-picture initiatives Ben was once shielded from mixed with the minutiae of the workday, plus juggling the personalities of those on his team was taking its toll. Ben used to half-jokingly introduce himself as the future CEO of POW! PR. Now he was unsure why he had wanted to be a leader at all. Was it naivety or outright stupidity?
Either way, this was not the time to get lost in self-analysis. Today Ben was pitching a new campaign to the whale of all accounts. This one client would make up for every failed proposal in the last five months and would mark an end to his horrendous dry spell. This was a defining moment in Ben’s career.
Take another deep breath,
Ben whispered to himself as he gathered the strength to get out of his car. Today has got to be better than yesterday.
Ben knew this was unlikely, but what choice did he have? The client meeting was beginning soon and the longer he procrastinated, the harder it would be to open the door. After mustering the energy to get out of the car, enter the building, and walk into his department, Ben realized he was right to be anxious.
Mary Jane, one of Ben’s best account representatives, was frazzled as she peppered Ben with questions about the presentation to the client. Who’s going to be in this meeting?
she asked.
Didn’t we determine this last week?
Ben said with not-so-veiled frustration. We are expecting four representatives from the client.
That was last week,
Mary Jane responded. Last I heard we have eight, including their CEO.
Their CEO is going to be here? Why wasn’t I told about this sooner?
T. Thomas Tylerson was the CEO of Gulag Corp. His vision had turned Gulag into a premier sports drink brand. Tylerson had a reputation for being generous and kind, but he was also known to be blunt, almost to the point of cruelty. He was a busy man and did not like his time to be wasted.
I don’t know why you didn’t know this, Ben. I told your assistant twice,
Mary Jane said.
Ben held back his aggravation. No problem,
he said, we have two hours to adjust the presentation for Tylerson.
Two hours? We have fifteen minutes,
said Mary Jane.
Not again. This was the third time this month that Betty, Ben’s assistant, had mis-scheduled an appointment. He’d have to deal with it later.
As the panic set in, Ben heard his creative team shouting at each other from the other end of the office. The topic was unclear, but Cliff, Larry, and Rita were prone to loud debates. What gives you the authority to change my photographs?
Larry shouted. You shouldn’t even have access to my drafts!
We have the same level of access,
Rita responded, "and without my graphics, your
