When Cancer Encounters Traditional Chinese Medicine - Zhongqing Zhang
Story: The Birth of a Book
The birth of this book originated in the news article:
Twenty nine-year-old Brittany Maynard of the United States had brain cancer, and was told that she could live only for six months.
She decided to choose death with dignity.
Upon reading the news, I immediately sent an email to Traditional Chinese physician Dr. Jeffrey Mah, asking him whether he could save her.
Dr. Mah soon replied to my email, saying, I think it's worth a try. I have cases in which terminal patients fully recuperate.
I was very excited and wrote to several media outlets, pleading that they quickly get in touch with the lady and convey to her our loving care. But Brittany could not hear our appeal.
She already left California and died in Oregon soon afterwards!
Upon hearing those words, I could not calm myself down for several nights.
I was thinking that this news article indicates that, Western Medicine has limitations in the treatment of cancer, and people need new alternative therapies. They need Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Many Americans are frustrated and perplexed by the fact that they can not find the right Traditional Chinese physicians.
We are now clear with our mission and the goals we strive to achieve: Let the world know about Traditional Chinese Medicine, and let it benefit mankind!
So, I interviewed Chinese medicine practitioners, written this book When Cancer Encounters Traditional Chinese Medicine.

INTRODUCTORY STORY
Decision of a Well-known American Oncologist
It was perhaps the most embarrassing and painful moment in John's life.
You have contracted a brain tumor, the most dangerous and intractable type.
As a well-known American brain tumor specialist he was told by the hospital where he had been working for 15 years.
John, you’d better have surgery immediately!
his colleague Kevin said sorrowfully.
John, 52, is energetic and sturdy. The surgical scrubs in light grey blue fit him very well, with his waist girded by a rope. His brown hair is in natural curls, and his clean square face is embedded with two brooding eyes and under his high-bridged nose, his usually pursed lips are kept tightly shut. A specialist who had been operating on the brain tumor patients became a cancer patient himself. He felt uneasy with the sudden reversal of roles.
Recently, he frequently suffered from migraine. His wife said to him, This means that the brain is reminding you to have an examination as soon as possible.
His wife’s instinct seemed to have been correct.
John, treatment of the brain tumor should not be delayed,
Kevin solemnly advised him. Once the tumor compresses the nerve, you will lose the abilities of speech and thinking. Since you’re clear-minded now, you need to make a decision or make arrangements right away.
Wait a moment!
said John. I need to call my wife.
After hearing John’s story, his wife said calmly, Shall I drive to pick you up?
No, I can drive home myself,
replied John.
Come home right away, Ok?
his wife said.
When John went home, his daughter Sophie burst into tears in his arms. Daddy, I don’t want you to die! You have promised me that you would take me to see the Louvre Museum in Paris.
John’s tears were mingled with those of his sniffling daughter. He put his arm around his daughter’s waist, held her in his arms, stroked her back, and said softly, Don’t worry, sweetie. Daddy will not die!
John, you're going to get through this!
his wife looked at his eyes, and said affectionately. You once vowed in the presence of God that you would unite with me until the end of life, and we would step into Paradise hand in hand!
John said, For the sake of this vow, I will hold on!
On that night, John tossed and turned, with a myriad thoughts rushing through his mind. If life ended like this, as he thought to himself, he would be plunged into the sea of remorse. He would regret that he had not been able to stay longer with his wife and daughter, and it was hard for him to swallow. He prayed at heart to God: Please give me courage and wisdom to live on! He repeatedly told himself: I must try all means to keep my life. I should not die!
On the second day, John again went to the doctor’s office. Kevin said to him soothingly, John, we have arranged for your surgery. It’s at two o’clock this afternoon. Now it’s up to you to sign the consent form.
Kevin. I understand your good intention, but isn’t this arrangement somewhat too hasty?!
John, seized by a fit of anger, asked angrily. At least, before the surgery, I need to have a detailed report on the risks of the surgery.
"This is the most basic requirement. If we want to construct a house, the design drawing must be evaluated by the experts in advance. If we hope to start a business or conduct a project, an investment risk report must be prepared. If our government wants to launch a new policy, a hearing must be held. And since our life is priceless, and surgery is a matter of life and death, isn’t a risk evaluation all the more necessary?! As you and I know, modern medicine believes that this kind of brain cancer is incurable. I have only about 10 months to live. Once I’m put on the operating table, even a minor surgical failure would instantly throw me into a vegetative state. Even if the surgery is successful, the recurrence rate of this kind of brain cancer is 100%. The side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy are even more frightening. In the past 15 years, I’ve seen so many patients in the terminal stage who are too miserable to look at after being tortured by cancer for so long. Sometimes, you are not even sure whether the patient lying in front of you was ever energetic and radiant. We can hardly understand the physical and psychological pain they have been suffering from. But, what they are facing is one disappointment after another and the head-shaking and sigh of the doctors over and again: Uh……things are not optimistic. We need to use more chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
The worst part of the problem is that the doctors still plunge you into everlasting perdition even though they know that all the tricks actually do not work at all!
John, true, we have been doing it like this before, and we have never had a surgery risk evaluation report,
explained Kevin.
All American hospitals should have such a report, but they don’t,
John retorted categorically. Then, begin with me!
I totally agree!
Kevin nodded and said.
Kevin, please forgive my outburst,
John reined in his emotion a little, and said. I’m not angry with you, but with what we have done in the past, and with the current cancer treatment approach of the United States. I had done the same thing as you did before, having a diagnostic report in hand, and telling the patient affectedly: Dear, it’s been confirmed that you have stage III xx cancer. Then we announce like judges: The cure rate of this cancer is very low, and the survival duration is only six months. If the tumor is removed by surgery, there is hope of a cure. But the recurrence rate within five years is 20%. So after surgery, you still need to accept chemotherapy and radiotherapy. We have made arrangements for surgery to remove the tumor. You see, we are seemingly caring for these patients, and are eager to save their lives. But as a matter of fact, all this is just covering up our neglect over the lives of the cancer patients.
"Kevin, to be honest, I could hardly sleep last night. I was thinking throughout the night. I reflected on our past behaviors, and at the same time, I was trying to find a new approach to cancer treatment. I was thinking what help I had given the patients over these past years as a physician. Only when I myself have become a patient have I learned to think from the standpoint of a patient. Now, I begin to understand the question that millions of cancer patients have in their heart: whether or not there is really any other option to surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy?
"Everybody hopes to be respected, and everybody needs to be respected. We should respect the young, the middle-aged, the elderly, the women, the men, the healthy and the terminally ill.
"I remember I read a book entitled ‘Confessions of a Medical Heretic’ written by Dr. Robert S. Mendelsohn, with a subtitle ‘How to Protect Our Lives from the Harm of Doctors, Chemicals, and Hospitals’. The publication of Dr. Mendelsohn caused quite a sensation in the United States. The book has been reprinted countless times, and enjoys numerous readers.
"His loyal readers stepped forward, and established an organization known as ‘National Health Federation’ (NHF). They elected
