We hired a babysitter, Bridgette, for that Thursday night. I had picked up a split shift at the diner so that I would have a little time to come home and cook dinner before heading back out, and Cade had volunteered to take on a second project at his job so he could bill more hours.

I was running close to late so I let the babysitter out of the car and left for work.

Work was work. Nothing special, just more money toward the house payment. Coming home, on the other hand, was nothing close to special.

I walked into the living room. The lights were down low and the house was quiet. Impressive - Bridgette must have been successful in getting the kids to bed.

I got to the top of the stairs and saw a sliver of light slicing along the hall floor, coming from our bedroom. Strangely, as I got closer, I could hear low muffled sounds. Curious, I looked through the crack between the door and the frame. I stopped dead in my tracks.

Well, I’d found Bridgette.
